Ammons' Drive Inn & Dairy Bar

We came into town for the 4th. Found this diner. 5 stars! The food was wonderful! The prices are fabulous I just want to say Thank you to the owner for those prices!!!! This place we will visit again and recommend to everyone! 5 stars all around!

Food was very old. We got mac n cheese mashed potatoes, baked potato, flounder sand. Everything was old but the coleslaw slaw. Potatoes were brown and dry mac n cheese was dry and old. My cornbread could fracture a skull. I asked for a baked potato since the mashed potatoes were old but the baked potato was even older and more brown. The fish was rubbery like it had been microwaved for too long. Prices went up and food went down. I'd rather eat the food there was here prior to them remodeling. Been coming here for 20 years. We would have gotten better food at a drive thru.

This is such a awesome place

There are places you go to eat because the chef studied in France, and there are places you go because somewhere deep in your soul you miss square pizza, wax paper cheeseburgers, and chocolate milk in a carton.
This place falls squarely into the second category.
Now before anybody gets all worked up and starts writing letters about “fine dining,” let me explain something. Not every meal has to arrive on a plate the size of a hubcap with parsley sprinkled around it like somebody cut the yard too close.
Sometimes a man just wants a cheeseburger that reminds him of the eleventh grade.
And brother, this place will take you there quicker than a Foghat song on an eight-track.
I pulled in and immediately knew what kind of establishment I was dealing with. The curbside setup looked like one of those old drive-ins where you halfway expect a girl on roller skates to slide up beside the car and call you “hon.” It’s the kind of place where you can almost hear baseball games on AM radio even when nobody has one turned on.
The burger came wrapped and stacked exactly like the ones they used to serve in public school cafeterias back in the late seventies and early eighties. Not “inspired by.” Not “elevated.” Identical. Same smell. Same taste. Same mysterious comfort that somehow made a Friday seem survivable.
I took one bite and fully expected the vice principal to walk over and tell me my hair was too long.
The country fried steak looked suspiciously like it came off the back of a Sysco truck sometime during the Carter administration, but I’ll tell you what — it was hot, crispy, covered in gravy, and came with two sides that would stick to your ribs all afternoon. Sometimes that is exactly what a meal ought to do.
And the blueberry cobbler? Mercy.
I don’t know whether somebody’s grandmother made it at daylight or if it came in frozen wrapped in plastic. I know this: put a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top of it and suddenly all is right with the world for about fifteen minutes.
Now let’s be fair. This place is not five-star dining. Nobody’s shaving truffles over your fries. Nobody’s discussing “notes of citrus” in the tea.
But there also ain’t a blessed thing wrong with it.
In fact, what this place serves better than anything on the menu is memory. You don’t just eat here. You remember here. You remember cafeteria trays, football games, small-town summers, station wagons, and when life was simple enough that supper and a milkshake could improve your whole day.
That’s worth something these days.

I had asked around to locate a good salad bar and was given Ammons' Drive In and Dairy Bar.
The experience was great. Easy parking, friendly greeting as soon as we entered, and prompt service from our waitress Shelby. The salad bar was fresh and in good order. Great selection on the bar. I was very pleased with my salad.

We have been coming here for years when we were in town for our WCU student. The food has always been good. Today we needed to get out fast so we decided to do curbside. They completely ignored us. Took every order from every car that came up for 10 minutes. They lost a really large order because we always get lunch and dinner for a 6 hr trip and leave a large tip. After about the 5th time they walked by us we left and went to Buttered Biscuit and got great food and great service!

The food was good and the server was very friendly, but they got our order mixed up so we had to send it back to be corrected. That didn't take too long. It was a beautiful day so we are outside in the UTV.

Ammons is a classic American diner/restaurant. Our server was friendly and very accommodating. SO had the double cheeseburger with chili (no beans) and onion rings. You could actually taste the onion in the onion rings! I had the three vegetable plate with decaf coffee. The sweet potatoes, baked beans and coleslaw were delicious. The roll was also delicious! Good Comfort food!

Tried the flounder sandwich yesterday, so good I got again today and paired with their fried pickles and they were awesome ! Great Chili dogs and sweet potatoes fries also with tasty beverages . Looking forward to my next visit keep up the great work !

Be Aware the prices have increased. i ordered a small Starry/Sprite for my grandson. I was charged $3.15. it had very little liquid and was full of ice! Then if I wanted a refill, it was an additional .75 cents! Needless to say, he drank part of my water! I understand things have increased, but $3.15 for a very small soda and then it full of ice was a total rip off!
