We moved here from Pennsylvania and it has been difficult to find good Chinese food. This place is so good, the flavors, spices, are perfect.
I went to this restaurant on 7/5/2022. I heard their food was delicious, and wanted to try them out. Upon coming into the restaurant no one was at the front to greet me. I needed to use the restroom and preceded to find it. I was met with an lady questioning what I was doing. And she told me that the restrooms where closed and to go somewhere else. I said to the lady “wait a minute I’m about you order from you”. She then says the kitchen was already closed and they are not taking anymore order. The time was about 7:40pm and they closed at 8:00pm. When I went outside to leave I saw the open sign was still on and came back to ask for the owners information. I was videoing at this point. I let her know that it was very disappointing and disrespectful how she spoke to me. And questions why she refused to serve me because clearly the open sign was on and people were in there eating. Her reply was that they just had a party and they are trying to finish with them.
What can I say except that Sandy is incredible? If you’re in Winston, this unassuming building will knock your socks off. A gentle, dimly lit restaurant with light music in the background, Sampan is a long-standing establishment in this area (more than 25 years!) What a delight. Please swing by for some lunch specials, authentic Asian cuisine, or familiar wonton soup (with a thin noodle wrapping, not a thick one, around the dumplings). Yum!
Fabulous old school authentic Chinese restaurant. Will definitely be back.
Sandy and her team deliver the best Chinese food in Winston Salem. Very calm and peaceful atmosphere to sit down. Great portion sizes when sitting down or taking out. Highly recommend her and have been a customer of her’s for decades.
Disappointed this go round . The broccoli with garlic sauce was flavorless, the fried rice was bland and gummy. The pickled daikon deserved a nod.
I don’t write reviews like EVER but this place was the most disgusting thing I’ve ever had. $25 for some vegetable mei fun and stir fried broccoli?!? The broccoli sauce looked like sewer water and how do you possibly make white rice nasty??? Never in my life again and I’m mad I have to take that loss
Fast and friendly service but the food was okay. Egg rolls were really good, but the garlic chicken lacked flavor and spice. The shrimp and chicken steamer was pretty good and so was the sweet and sour chicken. We were hoping for a better, more authentic Chinese food experience here but it was just okay and pretty typical of most Chinese restaurants. Not sure if we will try them out again or not.
Sanpan used to be my favorite resturant. What happened ? Did they change hands? Are they short ingredients due to covid or something? The food last evening was tastless. Lemon chicken was changed from suculent grilled filets smothered in tart lemon curd to typical out-of-the-bag heavily breaded cheap chicken tenders. The sause was watered down and absolutely tastless , although the price was increased ! Gen tso was even worse; crunchy deep-fried chicken skins it seemed, swimming in thick sauce. Skip this place. What a shame this once marvelous cuisine has gone downhill like it has.
Tried for the first time for lunch and got the chicken and mixed vegetables lunch special with fried rice and an egg roll. No paper to go menus and the plastic menus were very worn. I guess it was a good portion size for the lunch price. Not the brown sauce that I am use to, it was very watery and came out into the bag. The chicken and vegetables didn’t have much flavor. No sure if I will try again.

I think they have delicious steamed dumpling and egg rolls, General Tsao Chicken was good, above average portion and although I didn't dine in the place would be great to dine at??
We wanted change up from our usual Chinese place. Read wonderful reviews of this place and we gave it a try . Will never again . Sauce with everything so bland and watery.. Just plain taste like , plain everything . I don't like giving Negative but for 56.00$ .. Not ever again . It was not nothing to rave about . Mediocre and not Authentically Asian . By the way , you have to post a pic to leave a messge in Google :) What a set up
Best food we've had , excellent restaurant wonderful service
The Sampan Chinese Restaurant Experience (Dine-in Edition). I have been on an Asian cuisine kick lately and wanted to try Sampan. So, upon entering the restaurant, the lighting was low, which was strange, but I was determined to eat. The host served dual roles as the host and waitress. I was seated at a table and went to the restroom before ordering. The bathroom appeared clean, but someone left the trash can lid on the sink area.Once back at my table, I ordered their lunch garlic chicken with an egg roll. The egg roll came first and then my meal. The meal did not take long to arrive at my table and came hot. Everything was delicious and tasted fresh. Although the host worked dual roles as the host and waitress, there was no lag time in service. I would return to Sampan in the future. The food has a unique taste, unlike your typical Chinese restaurant, and is affordable.
Best general Tao's chicken in town always good
