I loved the concept of the salmon dish (can't think of the name right now), maybe salmon florentine, which is why i decided to come here.. unfortunately, the taste didn't match up.

I mean, it's Sweet Potatoes--Need I say more? No, but I will.
This place is a Winston-Salem institution. My husband and I always come here on a night when we feel like celebrating. Everything about this restaurant somehow manages to balance "homey" and approachable while still being special and elevated.
The atmosphere is full of warmth, color and good music. The bar tenders and servers are friendy and will tease and joke with you. They are great at picking up on if you want more or less space.
Now...The food. The FOOD is hits a place in your heart that not many other types of cuisine do. So much love, skill, creativity and flavor--Once you eat here it's like realizing you've been starving for days and didn't know it until you were full of sweet potato cornbread, collard greens and yardbird. If restaurants could be masterpieces, this would be one.

Overall experience excellent-
The vibe was not as culturally appealing as my last visit, but the food is still "to die for"!
Vegetarian options: ...not the best option for strict vegetarian, vegan food choosers.
BUT, for the rest of us, NOT TO BE MISSED!!!

Terrible. I traveled all the way from NY to support this establishment and was extremely disappointed. As a former bartender I've never sent out a drink without trying it. The "punch" was just as watery as a capri sun. Since when is any punch that color. We asked the server if we could have the drinks remade, comped or substituted and she advised that the manager/bartender declined. We also ordered the sweet potato corn bread which was about a 4/10, it simply wasn’t to my liking, nothing bad to say about it. We cancelled our dinner orders after the drink situation & paid the bill for the drinks and cornbread. The server was great, she handled the situation as best she could as her hands were tied. Once the bill was paid the “bartender” if thats what he should be called appeared with new drinks. I declined after the lack of service from management who never even visited our table until after the bill was paid.

Went in for lunch today with my Mom. Our initial service was very poor, we were seated without any direction the main menu is by QR code. After a few minutes waiting for menus, we figured that out. Then we continued to wait for 5-10 minutes while other tables were served but nobody came by our table. Thinking we might have to order online since the menus were QR code, my Mom went to the counter to ask. 3 employees standing there ignored her, and she had to say "excuse me" twice to get their attention. When she asked if we should order online, the man who seated us asked rudely "where our table was" and they claimed they didn't see us (he seated us and also the dining room is small in full view of the bar). We should have honestly left at that point but we were hungry and unfamiliar from the area so waited for service. They sent over a kind waitress who was very helpful, but it didn't turn around the initial poor service we received. Will not be back.

Great restaurant! Sweet potato cornbread is amazing, enough for two people to share. It's definitely a must-have for an appetizer or side. Should have got a take-home dish.

Food was incredible, but experience didn’t go as we hoped. Don’t miss the NOLA catfish. Cocktails arrived after we finished our meals, however. Then the manager refused to accept a gift card we had, saying “it’s too old.” There was no expiration date on the gift card, which a family member gave us. We have tried to support this local establishment for years, but experiences are inconsistent with the reputation.

Hate to sound Pollyanna but consistently great food, service, and a fine atmosphere. I don't like grits, I look forward to theirs. I don't understand how you get fried fish with that texture, moist, flaky, and not oily. The sweet potato cornbread and sweet potato pie are to die for.
Vegetarian options: I think last time there was a veggie burger, and there might be a salad, but it's a smallish menu and not many choices

I don't get it. I called this restaurant and ordered two whole sweet potatoes pies. The clerk told me it would be ready in 15 minutes. I'm like cool, because last time I ordered whole pies, they indicated that I must give them a day or two notice. So when I got there, the waiter indicated that I ordered two slices. He went on to tell me that he the one that took the order. He just called me a liar. Why would I order two slices and then get there and ask for my two whole pies? I live 20 minutes away. He then stated that they do not sale whole pies for the season. What season? The name of the restaurant is Sweet Potatoes but they don't sale whole pies. I purchased them in the past and they were $14.99 each. My point is, the clerk called me a liar but he was the one that was a liar. The food, service, and atmosphere is okay. My sister and her friend came to visit me and I took them there and they wouldn't seat us. They close at 9pm, but they want to be leaving the restaurant a 9pm. They make a great pie. It's a shame that they turn business away. Why minority businesses treat their own people like this? When folks come visit me from out of town, I like to take them there because they make a great pie. However, this was the last straw. The sad thing is, I think the two business women who I'm told own it do not care. I must say, my spouse and I are done with this place. If anyone knows of a soul food restaurant that make a great sweet potato pie, holla at me.

Appetizer was overcooked with no dipping sauce option. Also, fried tomatoes were very thin with almost no coating. Chicken for sandwich was also over cooked. Coleslaw awful and mambo sauce seems to be going for spicy while sacrificing taste. Way too overpriced for these results. Server was great but never should have served an appetizer that overcooked. Atmosphere is fine.

Anytime I'm in the area I'm coming here. The food was amazing. Staff and Service are Top Tier! Just be Ready to Wait. Not a Big Restaurant and was packed! But definitely worth the Wait!
