Burger Restaurants near Monowi

“Last year, I read about the Monowi Tavern in Monowi, Nebraska. My husband is is a native Nebraskan, so I asked him if he had ever heard of that town. He had not so we decided to take a road trip there this summer. I was intrigued that there was only one resident in that town and that this 93 year-young lady was still running the tavern six days a week!

We didn’t know what to expect as we were driving there. We almost missed it as the tavern is a bit recessed from the highway and there were no large signs indicating it.

The menu is extensive and it was a bit difficult to decide what we wanted to try. Mrs Elsie Eller was behind the counter, tending to the hamburgers. There was another gentleman who was helping her. When he was not serving drinks at the bar, he was helping in the kitchen. It was heartwarming to see the dedication she put into her tavern.

My husband ordered hamburger with fries while I had gizzards with fries. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal!

The tavern is comfortable and you can sit wherever you wish to. Once you are ready to place your order, you can either order at the bar or at the counter. They only accept cash, so make sure that you plan accordingly. It also wouldn’t hurt to call before going there to make sure she is open.

Mrs. Eller was gracious enough to allow people to take pictures with her, so we were thrilled that we took one with her!

There is a restroom located outside of the restaurant.

There is also Ruby’s library, which is located next to the tavern. It is dedicated to her late husband.

If you would like a scenic road trip to a one person town, then Monowi is the place to visit. The route we went on took us past Verdigre, the kolache capital, and Niobrara State Park.“
