As Indian Vegetarians, we absolutely love this place. They explain everything on the menu very sweetly.
Be sure to get:
- bibambap in hot stone bowl with tofu option
- tofu soup with ramen (be sure to mention “vegetarian broth” so they don’t use the beef broth)
Overall highly recommend. Very vegetarian friendly

We’ve been coming to this restaurant pretty regularly over the years. The food has always been homey and satisfying, and we’ve generally had good experiences here.
However, something happened today that left us a bit disappointed.
In the past, when we finished our banchan (the small Korean side dishes), the staff would usually offer refills without us even needing to ask. This time, though, no one offered, and when I did politely request a refill, only few of the whole original dishes were brought out.
I especially like their kimchi, so I asked if they had any more. The waitress who wears glasses, responded that if I was planning to take it home, I’d have to pay extra — “we don’t give it out for free,” she said.
I was a little shocked by the tone, which made it seem like I was trying to take advantage of them, rather than simply requesting a standard refill while dining in— something they’ve always done in the past.
It’s not a huge deal, but the shift in attitude definitely changed how I feel about the place. I’ve always tipped well and supported this restaurant, but after today, I’m not sure I’ll be back.

The food was ok, but my calbi has more bone than meat. Tofu soup is good.
Updated: I have been here many times after my first review. The food is getting worse. I come here because it is closer to us than Fort Lee. Never again. The tofu soup has no taste. The beef calbi looks old. Instead I gave you 3 stars before now I will give you 1 because you did not improved.
Best service, Best Tofu around the area

Have been here/order several times. 4 stars because I was not happy with the chicken bibimbap. It was very little chicken compared to beef bibimbap serving. I would not order that again for a dinner.

So Gong Dong Tofu & Korean BBQ in Hackensack offers a delightful Korean dining experience. The restaurant features a variety of authentic dishes, including tofu stew, bibimbap, and Korean BBQ. The flavors are bold and satisfying, with fresh ingredients that highlight traditional Korean cuisine. The staff is friendly and attentive, although service can be a bit slow during peak hours. Overall, it’s a great spot for a flavorful meal with a cozy atmosphere.

Beef bulgogi is very delicious. Bibimbpan in the hot stone bowl is totally worth it. The oyster tofu soup has a unique flavor with the Perilla seeds.

Consistency. That's how you can describe So Gong Dong. I've been here multiple times and experience the same thing over and over, which is a good thing:
- consistently good Korean food. People will use the word "Standard" - this is pretty accurate. I've never been disappointed, but nothing to write home about. However, whenever we want a comforting bowl of soondubu (bubbling-hot tofu stew), we come here.
- consistently quick, efficient service. Your order will be taken quickly upon sitting down. Banchan (side dishes) will be brought to your table 5 minutes afterwards. Your soondubu or bibimbap (spicy rice bowl with veggies and your choice of protein) will be brought out 5 minutes after that by a waiter pushing a cart stacked with orders. Your water glass will always be kept full. Although they are efficient, I've never felt pressured to leave so that they can turn over my table, as I have felt in other places.
We ordered don katsu (fried pork cutlet with rice, salad and sweet sauce/curry on the side) and seafood soondubu. As usual, you can choose your protein and spiciness level.
The banchan was good. However, I felt like the kimchi was a little too fresh and not fermented enough. The spiciness had not yet penetrated into the cabbage, which I prefer. The don katsu was good - standard. The salad dressing, however, didn't have a lot of character, I tasted nothing other than mayo. The soondubu was good - as mentioned: standard. These are minor criticisms for an otherwise good meal.
The atmosphere is bright, clean with elegant and non-distracting nor overbearing decor. Although, there are ample tables and booths, this place is popular so I often see one or two families waiting in the wings during peak hours.
SGD is worth a visit when you need a comforting Korean meal. It will be as good as it was when I visited and will be the same when you go.
