Mr. C is always making sure we are happy with what he has prepared for us. Sometimes he will add his own little touch once he gets to know you and what you like. He will make great suggestions if you are not sure what you would like. The girls at the counter are great! This is a small hidden gem!“

We’re on vacation and stumbled upon Tortas Lokas Elizabeth¡what a gem! The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and Karen went above and beyond to make us feel at home. The menus are in both English and Spanish and have descriptions if you are not familiar with Mexican food. I love this place and you really can’t beat the prices. “Came to Maize for dinner with my toddler and husband to see what the hype was all about. Margarita was excellent. Was bummed my daughter didn’t have access to a high chair as they only have two and were being used. For a restaurant in a family friendly downtown there needs to be more high chairs available. Food was ok. Atmosphere 5 stars. Service was good. My daughter’s meal was also forgotten and did not come out with the main entree. Likely would come back for drinks and appetizers on a date night versus with my toddler.“

“No matter who you are or where you’re from, there’s a strong chance that you’re familiar with the meaning of “Taco Tuesday,” which exists across the US, from Los Angeles to small-town Tennessee, from food trucks in the barrios to high-end restaurants in hipster haunts. For some of us, it might simply call for going out and getting tacos or even just preparing our own.

Situated in the middle of a residential neighborhood in Roselle Park, this establishment is set inside a small corner suburban home where some of my colleagues decided on takeout, which came highly recommended. Upon arrival at Taqueria La Casita, or “The Little House Taqueria,” we were confronted outside by the neon signage reading “Tacos Open” and Mexican flags, among other pieces of colorful decor.

Greeted by the staff inside an un-air-conditioned cozy dining room decked out in its Mexican splendor with 4 tables. In the back, a colorful menu with nearly a dozen different types of tacos and an array of other dishes written by hand.

We opted for individual orders containing 4 tacos with Shrimp, Chicken, Steak, and Pork. While waiting, we couldn’t help but notice the trompo—the spinning, shawarma-adjacent log of marinated pork used for Al Pastor, which translates to “in the style of the shepherd.” Originating in Puebla, this came at the hands of Lebanese immigrants during the 1930s.

The tortilla itself was freshly made, of the corn variety. They were stuffed to the brim with meat prepared in front of us and served with cucumbers and lime. Fresh condiments of diced onion, cilantro, and avocado were separated in their own container, and all were needed. Various sauces accompanied in small containers, such as green, which was jalapeño-based; the darker red salsa was smoky from dried and smoked chipotle chilis; and neon orange, which was a sauce made from chili de arbol and tomato. The guacamole was absolutely delicious along with the chips, and we couldn’t get enough. The portion was a healthy size.

The service was fast; Maribel was friendly and accommodating. Authentic, fresh, and affordable—we can recommend this place.“

“I grew up in Texas and enjoyed this authentic beef taco bowl for a casual and affordable dinner in Newark. The owner and staff clearly put their hearts into each ingredient in the bowl which comes together as a Tex-Mex festival of flavors.

Kid-friendliness: Saw a mother and daughter there. Lots of teenagers were eating there as well.“

The ceviche is quite good, order it 'less spicy' like we did if that's not your thing. I had fish soft tacos, which were done well and portion size was good. Guacamole is very good - better than that C chain place. Service seemed stretched - not enough staff in my opinion, I only saw two servers and two in the kitchen (from my guess) on a Saturday night around 7pm. It's BYOB, so I guess its never really packed.“

“Everything here is SO FRESH. I came here with my family of 5 and all of our dishes were extraordinary. Everything came out piping hot and very delicious. We ordered the guacamole, shrimp with garlic sauce, mixed fajitas, chicken burritos and breaded chicken and breaded fish filet. “Wow!!! What can’t I not say about this place , the decor was incredible you can see that the place has history. I felt like going back home and changing my out for this place is amazing ! The service was Superb, we didn’t have to ask our waiter or waitress for anything we were constantly attended to . The food was great and the portions are are great. I went with my fiancé and daughter so I always order family style , so we had a little of everything . I know it’s cold out but I love a good frozen margarita and it was perfect .
