In 43 years, this was my first time ever having a rude waitress. I hope she’s having a better day today. I ordered the Angus Beef Picaña (medium well) with brown rice and fries. They gave me 2 New York strips (well done) with yellow rice and no fries. With a smile, I politely informed the waitress that I was given the wrong order. She literally told me “we do not sell New York strips so your dish is not called New York strips , that is not the wrong order”. I showed her the New York strips on the menu and she walked off. I had to ask another waiter for my order who was very polite. When she brought my fries 30 minutes later, she slammed them on the table and knocked my drink can over but thankfully the can was empty. Although We were a party of 11, she literally made 1 whole bill WITHOUT ever asking if we wanted to split it , and she slammed that down beside me and walked off. I hope she’s having a better day today but she really made my first experience at Cuban Pete’s uncomfortable. All the other waiters were extra courteous and polite but the waitress with the low eyes was not. They say it used to be packed in there but there were plenty of seats available last night. And now I know why.

Cuban Pete’s used to be the place to be — great food and excellent service. Unfortunately, that’s completely changed. The service is terrible, the food was mediocre, the place had an unpleasant smell, and the staff was awful. Not worth the money.

The vibe is good, the food was good. The waitress was the disappointing part. We wanted coffee, but the waitress showed up with the check and never asked us if we wanted anything else. We felt as if she was rushing out.

One of my favorite spots of all time. I’ve had many memories here. The food/tapas are so good. Love the mixed sangrias. The vibe is always vibing. The island theme is on point. 10 out of 10 I would recommend.

We went to celebrate a birthday of a cousin, we sat outside, service was good, the food arrived at the same time, no complain or way of improvement. At the end they sang the happy birthday to my cousin, lovely.

I went got my birthday 🎂 and the food was okay. No liquor was available so that was a bummer. The food wasn't the greatest.

This place is literally crumbling before our eyes. A once go-to spot for great food, vibes, and hospitality is now a poorly managed restaurant witnessing its slow death.
The word around town is that the drop in quality is due to the owner/manager Dominic's absence. Over 15 years, he was the person who had this place running at top-notch, and without him in the cockpit this restaurant has taken a severe nose-dive.
I have tried to give the place the benefit of the doubt, because we all have days that we are not at our best... so I gave them 3 more opportunities in this last 4 months and I am officially done with this place.
Here is a list of what to expect now that they are without Dominic:
1) No plate settings when seated
2) No menu when seated
3) 12-16 minutes before a server actually acknowledges that you have been seated.
4) Very noticeable DIRTY silverware and glassware.
5) DIRTY bathrooms with garbage piling out of trash cans.
6) Lower quality food that now relies on extra rice or potatoes, while significantly reducing the amount of protein they now serve.
7) Waiters will not touch your table or even ask if you would like another beverage... you must do your best to flag them down.
8) Also, the food used to be piping hot when it was served, but it is now warm to almost room temperature.
All in all, with so many great places to eat in Montclair, I would suggest avoiding this one. Once the best in town, is now a slowly dieing joke of an establishment. No more good food, vibes, and hospitality. I feel bad for Dominic, he is one of the best service managers I have ever seen. He made Cuban Pete's the success it once was. It is a shame that we have to watch his son run this establishment into the ground.
Ok food... Absolutely terrible service. Was seated for 45min without anything to drink. Asked for a glass of water 3 separate times and was not given until getting ready to pay the check. When the glass was brought out, particals were floating around in the water. Food was OK. Half of my meal was cold and the ther half warm. Other tables around us experienced similar issues. Server was incoherent to any of the problems customers had.
