Excellent fish. Less than stellar service.

Unfortunately we will never come back to Shumi. We sat down for a 7:45pm reservation for Omakase- and it was the most rushed, and unfulfilling experience we have ever had. Would never expect an Omakase experience to be surrounded by rushing and cleaning around you- and zero attention from any team member (they were more concerned with closing). Really sad, as we did enjoy prior experiences here… but this was classless and we will not return. Plenty of better sushi spots in Ridgewood to enjoy!

When the restaurant has more than 5 orders, it’s apparently excusable to mess up your order. The explanation I got when asked about the snafu was: “we had 5 orders come in at that time.”

Service felt… off. I was repeatedly addressed as “guy,” and the waitress bumped into me multiple times throughout the evening. Even something as simple as ordering water turned into a test of patience.
That said, the rest of the staff was personable and attentive, and the rest of the table genuinely enjoyed their food. Nothing we had was bad.
Still, the constant interruptions—especially the overly frequent water refills that led to more bumping—made the experience feel awkward rather than relaxed.

Loved our dinner! Food was unique and amazing. Rolls were inventive and great and different appetizers! Loved everything we ate! Can't wait to go back!

Great service and food, the waiter was polite and patient. We were able to enjoy our food and the experience. I highly recommend coming here if you are craving good Japanese food.

Just a wow experience. We went again last night in Ridgewood. I cannot say enough about the amazing staff. The most fantastic and fresh sushi anywhere. I wish I could give it 10 stars. The new Chilean roll was so good we ordered another one. Truly the best of the best. If you don't go here for sushi you're missing out. Make reservations you will not be disappointed. Bravo!!! Very low quality rolls and vegetable dumplings. I ordered delivery and was really disappointed — the food was not fresh or well made. On top of that, they forgot to include soy sauce. Overall a poor experience. I would not order from here again.
