This is a no-nonsense old school type luncheonette serving great sandwiches at very fair prices. Whatever their secret is, it makes a difference in a good way and somehow puts their Cuban sandwich above the rest.

We arrived expecting the best Cuban sandwiches in Nj. To our disappointment they fell extremely short of our expectations. We bought 2 lunches (fried chic/rice/bean/plantains), a Cuban sandwich, and an assortment of croquetas. The lunches were eaten by our kids with no problem. But the review is based off of the so called best Cuban sandwich in town. The sandwich was dry, flavorless, no mustard, and pickles so thin they were non existent. The owner/old server was awesome. I have mixed feelings writing this review, but my disappointment overcomes my sense of respect to the owner. After eating he gave my kids free homemade plantain chips and my kids love it. The look of the place is run down, but I grew up in Hudson county and I don’t really care. I still however must give the atmosphere rating. In all if you want to give it a try maybe you will get the owner at a better day, but this would be my one and only visit.

I don't want to write this. This was our go to spot for Cuban sandwiches. We heard the rumors of the old man not wanting to retire. Unfortunately it's the quality has gone down a lot and he shouldn't be running the shop. To start he was speaking with a friend for about 7 minutes before he realized he had a line of customers. We were first in line. He was very slow get to working on our order and couldn't hear well. While we were ordering 2 men left. In English they said they didn't have time to wait. Thats just the start. He was taking cash payments and touching the food with no gloves. I ordered a croqueta, he grabbed it with no gloves or utensil and it was stale and cold. My media noche left me sad. He forgot the mustard and the pickles. I didn't finish it mostly because he kept taking cash payments. My partner had a ham & Swiss. Again, no condiments. I hope the family can take over because the son is why we kept coming back. He's the best sandwich maker. Again, I didn't want to write this but it's just not what it used to be. As we paid he took a napkin and blew his nose behind the counter.

I don’t know if it’s the best Cuban sandwich, but I can’t think of a better one.

La Pola was labeled the Best Cuban Sandwich in the nation and it is a pure fact and well earned rating. I grew up in WNY and this was always our go to for the best Cubano, their Especial De La Casa is my favorite. I live upstate NY and the over an hour drive down just for a couple sandwiches. Stopping in tomorrow morning on our drive up from Baltimore.La Pola is an old school institution. You go there for the good food and friendly service. I recommend!

The Cuban sandwich was terrible. If you prefer bread over meat, this is the spot. Plenty of other delis make a better Cuban. Don't believe NJ.com or any fancy chef. Take your $10 put it in a roll and that tastes better.

This will be simple. Yes, it's the best Cuban Sandwich I've ever had. Not sure what the secret is but it was worth the trip!

When I was a teenager, my brother said we had to stop in a tiny restaurant, because he wanted a sandwich. He bough a "Cuban", and handed half to me. I hated pickles, and it was a life-long hatred; the kind that you've marinated in, which drips from every inch of your body, without effort, but they shaved them so thin that it was more of a condiment than the olive-green disc of seedy rubber fast-food had made me expect. I didn't know what they had slipped me, until I was half done enjoying it. The salty tang complimented the mojo pork and mojo sauce, not found on so many "Cuban sandwiches" outside this area. And that's how fast I stopped hating pickles, shifting to the healthy suspicion a person should have in the first few steps toward making an enemy into a friend. When I walked in the door and asked for 'sándwich cubano', he said, in an accent unexpectedly like my Grandparents, "You can have that, but wouldn't you like this, instead?", as he lifted the polished stainless steel lids off four buffet serving troughs, steaming with the smell of green peppers, onions, two kinds of rice, and mojo pork. He assured me this was better than his best seller, so I ate, and he offered seconds, so I ate more. When I was done, the only thing holding back an involuntary reverse purge of my stomach was a desire not to offend this man, and then he charged me a fair price.I vowed to return and eat that Cuban sandwich, as I've been in the area to take care of my mother, and expected to be there longer, and when I did get it, the bread, sauce, and meats rose to my expectations, but somehow the pickle did not. I thought to myself: "When you spend twenty-five years romanticizing the memory of a first sandwich, while eating poor copies of it, there truly is not any way reality can live up to what the mind constructs in the place of a faded past.". I had my sandwich, I enjoyed the atmosphere, and if anyone tries to serve you a Cuban sandwich without buttery green garlic sauce, dream of something a little more exotic, and visit La Pola, while the proprietor is still running the show.
