Went for date night to try something new and it blew us out of the water! Our server Robert was awesome. He reccommended us the Oh La La muscles and oh my gosh! They are a must try! The pretzel and moose burger were beyond delicious as well. Surprised it wasn't busier when we went in for the quality of food and service this place provides. Deffinitely worth the visit!

The food was so so, the service good, the music was punk rock which I love, but the guy at the bar kept changing songs every five seconds. They were missing some key choices in beers.

This is a hidden gem.My husband researched diligently & this menu caught our eye. The restaurant is eerily empty, I didn't understand why and it was an instant alarm for me.However, the bartender was AMAZING & doing his best to make everything OK, including answering the phone when I called for a reservation & sitting us at an appropriate table for 7.The FOOD IS simply FANTASTIC, everything we ordered was SPOT ON.Our waitress needs hands on trying and the bartender did his best....if anything, this is a management issue.Once that gets sorted & the bartender is given a better array of beers, they only had half the selection to serve, & no ciders or sours & the waitresses are trained to support him better .... this place could definitely be an A+ establishment.Definitely recommend but come with patience....focus on the food and you won't be disappointed. The mussels are phenomenal, jigs dinner ones were incredible, the red curry & I can't remember rather Dijon cream ones name but it was a personal favorite! Such GOOD FOOD!!

A waiter that was obviously sick like cold or flu, tasteless SJ porter, moose that I would guess half moose half beef and very little sauce. That's what you get.

We had the best time here at Frugal Steins. Grace, our beertender, was so nice and friendly. She told us some cool places to visit while in the area. We had great conversations about vans and camping. Nice pub feel, we didn't here but ate at the connected pub upstairs the day before. One of our best experiences visiting St. John's is going to the pubs and meeting the local folks.

Was in St. John's for vacation. It's certainly a surprise to see a German restaurant to appear in a small city like St. John's. The moose burgers taste just like beef burgers so you'll have to take their word for it. We also ordered a very rich poutine and a nice and warm pretzel. All the food items here are reasonably priced, but overlooked a lot, as most people come here just to drink German beer.Vegetarian options: Some vegetarian options, however they aren't labeled as vegetarian.Parking: During the summer, you cannot park near the restaurant as the road is closed, so you have to park a few blocks away and walk to the restaurant. It should be okay any other time of the year.

Beers, food, service, and atmosphere are all good but not great or 5-star.I had the pale ale, dill pickle spears, and onion rings. Beer was alright and the food was typical of every other pub like this. Server was friendly and removed dishes as needed but wasn't too attentive. We had to ask a couple times for condiments.Although it wouldn't be my go to spot downtown, I would recommend Frugal Steins for cheaper beer and pub food.

When we went in the servers were gathered at the bar chatting. We had to pick a table on their patio that was clean. The waitress slowly ambled over to our table looking completely disinterested and bored. We ordered mussels “Oh La La “ off their menu expecting something special and got a smaller portion than usual at other restaurants in town which had a thick sauce not unlike cheap canned clam chowder. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.
