The best meal we had in St. John’s. The tuna and the kale were the standout dishes for us. All dishes were flavourful and well prepared. The cocktails were also delicious. Very reasonably priced for the quality of the food and the portion sizes. We will definitely be back!

We have been to Portage on several occasions with no issues, but tonight was an issue - our table was not asked about allergies initially. My partner is extremely allergic to nuts, and the item that was listed on the menu without mention of peanuts was cooked in peanut oil with peanut toppings, only when served was this mentioned. Very disappointed in our experience tonight.

Excellent food - especially the vegetable dishes - and excellent service. But for a place with its price point and culinary ambitions, the music was ... punishing. Thump thump thump at 100 to 120 beats per minute, mostly electronic beats. The sort of music and volume you'd expect in a body pump class, not in a restaurant like this. It's hard to imagine that, if polled, the 35 through 65 age group that made up most of the clientele would pick music like that. I like the boisterous loudness of a popular restaurant. But that boisterousness drowns out the melody of unsophisticated dynamically compressed music of the sort that was played so that all you hear is the thump thump thump, pounding you into submission. A general rule of thumb: if the music has a thump thump thump bass line, it belongs in a bar or a dance club, not a restaurant. We had the same issue at the other upscale place we ate at in St. Johns. There is so, so much great music out there, from all kinds of musical traditions. Pick any of it ... as long as it doesn't have that thump thump thump.

Great service and great food. Loved loved loved the vegetables!!! All of them! The only thing is the snow crab was not worth it. It is served cold, too salty which covered the sweetness too much and it was really small Compared to Skipper’s in Bonavista. But we RECOMMEND!!!!!

First of all, everything — except the chicken liver — tasted fantastic. The vibe was great, and most of the staff were wonderful. But the chicken liver was downright awful, and to make matters worse, one short blonde server completely ruined the evening. She messed up our bill, acted impatient, and when one of my friends (who was upset about the chicken liver) decided not to tip, she literally skipped the tip option on the payment machine and just dumped it on our table without a word. It was incredibly rude, dismissive, and unprofessional — especially during a birthday celebration. We were still happy to tip the other staff generously, but because of her attitude, we had to scramble for cash just to make sure the rest of the team got what they deserved. Her behavior left an awful taste that overshadowed what should have been a great night.

The chicken liver was very gamey, and I felt nauseous for two hours after eating it. The snow crab was too salty, and my Diet Coke never came. Service was okay at first, but one server tossed the receipt at my friend. They also charge $6 per person if you bring a birthday cake. For such a high-rated restaurant, the quality was disappointing.

Genuinely good! All items we selected from the menu were gastronomically amazing! The service was a bit slow but the servers were super kind and ensure that we weren’t forgotten. Cozy small restaurant with homie ambiance.

Very nice dinner. Paris was a terrific server. Lovely to have so many delicious vegetables and perfectly cooked halibut. A wee bit loud but nice, bustling vibe.

fantastic music and warm ambiance - comfortable and knowledgable service from pepper - scallop crisp standout and for the first time in my life my favourite part of the meal was the pastry/dessert - the brioche pickled raisins bread was immaculate and both dessert were a mind boggling mixture of fresh and fatty flavours and constraint textures that made every bite a slightly different experience (the seabuckthorn dessert and the rubharb one!)

Went in and was a little upset at how small the menu was, but all the food turned out amazing!! Had the steak salad and it was top 2 salads of all time! Then had strawberry/chocolate ice cream for dessert, and it was one of the best desserts ever! Fantastic food!!
