I decided it was finally time to try Krispy Krunchy Chicken. More or less, I’d seen a few reviews online that made it look appealing. I’d always steered clear since it’s served inside a gas station. But to be fair, one of my favorite chicken spots in Austin, Church’s Chicken, was also in a gas station. The difference there was that they had a drive-thru and seemed more organized overall.

When I walked in, I saw that Krispy Krunchy Chicken was basically a single worker behind a counter with some chicken on display. That gave me a little pause, but I’d already committed to trying it, so I went ahead and ordered.

I got a 3-piece bone-in chicken meal: a breast and two legs. Pretty ideal selections, IMO. For the side, I picked mashed potatoes and gravy, mainly to mentally compare it against KFC’s.

Starting with the mashed potatoes and gravy: the gravy was savory but had a slightly strange flavor I couldn’t quite get past. Maybe similar to Popeyes? The potatoes were thick, but unfortunately too goopy, and the flavor was just off. I couldn’t finish them. As a combo, the side was passable, but not as tasty as KFC’s. I’d give it a 6 out of 10, with KFC’s gravy holding a 10 for me, although KFC’s mashed potatoes always feel too thin.

Now onto the chicken. I started with a leg and really appreciated what tasted like injected hot sauce near the bone. If I had to guess, I’d say Popeyes probably does something similar, just at a higher caliber. That said, the chicken had clearly been sitting in the warmer for a while. It was obvious in both taste and appearance. KFC’s chicken tends to taste fresher and hotter, even if their original recipe breading is way less consistent.

To its credit, Krispy Krunchy Chicken lived up to its name. Every piece was genuinely crispy and crunchy. The breast wasn’t bad, but the way it was cut made it hard to eat. I found myself picking around big bones just to get to the meat.

All in all, the eating experience, flavor, and freshness are what led me to give Krispy Krunchy Chicken 2 out of 5 stars. Being inside a gas station doesn’t help the atmosphere. There weren’t even any tables that I noticed. Certainly not close to the Krispy Krunchy counter. It definitely felt like a counter inside Sinclair’s convenience store than a standalone food spot.

I wouldn’t eat here if you’re on the hunt for a KFC killer. If you’re just looking for some chicken with a little hot sauce flavor baked in, or something different, you’ll find that here. But it’s a far from mind-blowing experience.

Don't sleep on this chicken just because it comes from a gas station. Some of the best fried chicken I've ever had.

The manager of the gas station is friendly, along with staff. We dont eat out a lot, but my husband loves the chicken, we eat there at least 3 times a month. Good prices, too. Definitely worth trying it out.

Delicious chicken!! If you havent tried it, do so. Make sure you go to a location that actually has a kitchen in it. Krispy krunch here are found in gas stations, if they dont have a kitchen it isnt fresh and you shouldnt bother.
