We went there for lunch on a whim on a weekday. The place is tiny and clean and doesn't look fancy. The food was Balkan style - either Serbian or Croatian - and it was very good. There was only one person working there and she took care of us well.

I've enjoyed Ukus for over 15 years, but feel like the meal we enjoyed from there yesterday was a new peak food experience. Now that tomatoes and cucumbers are getting really good, their salad, Ukus Salata, is genuinely my favorite in Astoria, with delicious Bulagarian feta and a sensational vinaigrette dressing. They threw in a free bread, which reminded me how spectacular their pita-like bread is. The meat-lover really loved their juicy, flavorful chicken skewers and the meat burek. I will say that their spinach and cheese burek is one of the greatest dishes in New York.

The lady that works there is very rude and unprofessional. When we got into the restaurant she didn’t even say hello to us. She dropped menu in front of us like we are animals without saying anything. Very disappointed with hospitality. So sad because we didn’t try the food. We just left after that very rude service.

Ukus is a humble place with a lot of heart and great food. Located on a less busy side of 30th Ave, this mom-n-pop Balkan restaurant operated by a Montenegran family offers a variety of Balkan staples with minimum fuss and maximum taste.
The burek is flaky and flavorful and I usually stick to cheese or spinach, but they also have meat, cabbage, and potato slices. I brought two friends along who’d never tried Balkan cuisine and they were instantly in love with the cevapi, which was grilled to perfection and complemented perfectly with raw onions, ajvar, kajmak, and develops warm bread.
We also really enjoyed the pausili, which had a really delicious smoky flavor; this was my favorite dish and one I will definitely go out of my way for on cold days. We also tried the sudzukice, which I think I actually preferred over the cevapi because I found the thin beef sausages to be a bit more moist and flavorful.
Great service and food make this cash only establishment one worth coming back to!
