Black Rican Vegan Pop-Up offers an exceptional vegan dining experience in New York City. After eagerly anticipating the restaurant's arrival, one customer made the 45-minute subway journey from St. Louis just to try the food, and they were not disappointed.
Upon arriving, the customer was greeted by the lively atmosphere and friendly staff at La Fonda, the venue where Black Rican Vegan Pop-Up operates. While the food took some time to prepare due to the large order, the staff apologized for the wait. The customer didn't mind, as they were able to enjoy the music and ambiance while sitting at the bar.
The standout dishes included the Vacalaito, nicely sized fritters made from hearts of palm that were described as "very tasty" - even better as leftovers reheated in an air fryer. The Beefless Empanada was also a hit, with its flavorful vegan "beef" filling. The customer wished they had ordered two, as they were craving more after finishing the one.
The Moxtails (vegan/mock oxtails) were a revelation, with a "freggin fire" flavor and wonderfully succulent texture. Served with white rice, shredded cabbage, and plantains, the dish was deceiving in its small portion size but ended up being very filling. The customer raved about the Cilantro Garlic sauce, which they liberally added to the rice, and also praised the Chipotle sauce for dipping.
The Bistec Encebollado, a vegan spin on a classic Latin Caribbean dish, was another standout. A huge portion of vegan steak was accompanied by white rice, pink beans, tostones (fried plantains), and salad. The flavors had settled in and improved even more by the time they reheated the leftovers.
Overall, the customer was extremely impressed by the flavors and quality of the food. They spent around $75 for two meals and two appetizers, which they felt was a decent value. They were eager to return and try more items from the Black Rican Vegan Pop-Up menu, which includes a chef's cookbook.
Recently, another customer catered from Black Rican Vegan for a work event and reported that everyone loved the food, calling it the best vegan vendor in NYC. Another reviewer, who has been vegetarian for almost two years, drives nearly two hours to enjoy the food and recently got the cookbook to try making the meals at home. They expressed confidence that the food made by the chef would always be better. A final reviewer, a Vegan Boriqua, stated that they have yet to enjoy anything better and encouraged others to support this local legend.
