Bar Mario has been on our list for a while. Glad we got to step in. The staff were super warm and welcoming, especially Natalie!! We sat at the bar and enjoyed our conversation with her along with some of the specials and recommendations for the night. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, so delicious and comforting. Highly recommend the lasagna. A lovely spot, so happy we finally got to try. Will be back soon!
Top place. Bravo!!!

Bar Mario holds my number one spot amongst the great restaurant/bar scene Red Hook has to offer. The staff is down to earth and extremely welcoming. sitting at the bar typically leads to a nice conversation either with fellow patrons or the staff themselves. What really pushes it over the edge for me is the consistency in quality of the food. I would recommend ordering the Ceaser salad followed by one of the seasonal specials and ending your visit with the tiramisu.

Superb spot. The food is out of the world: we had steak for two, cesar salad and vegetable side. Everything was very delicious and top notch. The bartender is delightful and knows her stuff. Red Hook has very few restaurants and this is a top one for me in the area.

Such a nice atmosphere, and thoughtfully put together decor, a great playlist, and the space felt familiar, intimate and welcoming. Natalie was a lovely and knowledgeable server. We had the pork shoulder which was so tender, and the rigatoni with bacon was divine also. And we followed Natalie’s rec for the butter crust pie and we were so happy we did, the owner created it and it’s delish!

Delicious vegetarian meal (cauliflower sans anchovy) at the bar with a passion fruit mocktail served by the lovely bartender Natalie.

I have now been to Bar Mario several times, and it is absolutely worth a 5-star review.
First, the ambience is terrific. It’s not a huge restaurant (so I would make a reservation): a few 2- and 4-seat high tops, maybe 6 or 7 tables, and a bar with about 10 seats. But the environment is warm and cozy, with low lighting and music loud enough to enjoy, soft enough to have conversations with your party, the bartender, or whoever else. The servers are all excellent. Very charming and friendly. They check in often, but not in an intrusive way. I’ve also seen the owner walking around, greeting customers, and talking with his staff. He’s always around, and he’s a friendly presence. There’s such a great neighborhood vibe here - there are definitely some regulars here, and it helps create a homey atmosphere.
The food here is outstanding. I have not had a bad dish here. The Caesar salad is actually made with several long stalks of romaine, so it stays crisp. The meatballs come with polenta around the plate, and it is fantastic. I’ve also had the hangover spaghetti (excellent) and the lasagna (amazing). Their calamari also has a few shrimp and (I think) some bay scallops, so that’s a great addition. And their cocktails are outstanding - potent but flavorful.
I don’t get a chance to go to Red Hook much, but when I do, I definitely want to stop here. It’s on the “main road” of Red Hook, and there are definitely some cute shops and coffee places around, and of course, there’s Ikea not too far. This restaurant, though, deserves your business.

5 stars to food, service and atmosphere!!!! Cozy and “moody.” They’ve got oldies playing with vibey lighting. I was really drawn by light fixtures at the bar and the overall design of the bar. Portions were perfectly sized, flavors were SPOT ON.
Pictures really don’t do it justice but the brussel sprouts with arugula were really nice and cronchy. Beets tasted like a balanced appetizer dessert, not too sweet, the honey nor the Gorgonzola overpowered and the walnuts were a nice addition for texture. Focaccia was soft but also perfectly toasted with olive oil and fresh rosemary. Our pasta dishes were cooked perfectly in terms of al dente, and richness in sauce. We got the hazelnut cookie cake that just a big mic drop lol
Anyways, highly recommend as their service was lovely as well

My girlfriend and I wandered in after a day at Ikea and we couldn't have been luckier. The food is really amazing, like better than some michelin star restaurants i've been too. Hope thats not too much hype but every dish was excellent. The brussel sprouts and the beets were both light and flavorful. Dont forget the foccacia. We also got a spicy sausage pasta (paccheri) which was my favorite and the mushroom pasta (pappardelle) was rich and tasty. The meal was topped off by the gianduiotto hazelnut cake that I can't stop thinking about. Can't wait to come back!
