Excellent authentic food. The menu is outrageous with all of the different items you can order. It's almost like going to a diner every meal I've had there so far has been amazing and the staff is usually pretty funny.

About 18% of the world's population lives in China while the U.S. has approximately 4.5% of the population. I've tended to think of Chinese cuisine as a monolithic entity rather than a dynamic mix of regional cuisines. I've been trying to address my ignorance by eating at Chinese restaurants that advertise their regionality. Hong Kong Bakery & Bistro is Cantonese/Guangdong. From my very limited research, the cuisine is light and mild, steamed rather than stir fried. This is certainly a simplification but it is a starting point. One of the more famous dishes from the region is dim sum. Dim sum means "touch the heart". They are small steamed or fried savory items, snacks. These are the items I focused on during my visits to the bakery/bistro. Each item was different enough from the other to make for a pleasant and satisfying meal. Steamed dishes - beef ball with bean curd skin, shrimp with spinach dumpling, roast duck dumpling, rice rolls with roast duck. Fried dishes included deep fried pork dumpling and fried shrimp ball. Most of the rolls were made with glutinous rice of varying thickness or cornstarch, either steamed or deep fried. The sauces were also wide-ranging, savory to sweet, and added much to the meal. What I didn't know - dim sum is usually accompanied with tea. I can see how that can elevate the experience. Since it is a bakery, I also tried some of those items. Custard buns, coconut custard buns, coconut pudding, dried pork buns, and even tiramisu were tested. Some notes - The dried pork buns added pork floss (dried pork manipulated to the texture of rough cotton candy) to the outside of the bun. Coconut pudding - subtle fragrance and flavor of coconut coagulated with agar agar as the gelling agent. It's more "bouncy" than jello - not my favorite. I think some of the baked items were bought from a wholesaler - there's a whole lot there. The most underwhelming item was the tiramisu. Well, who gets tiramisu at a Cantonese place? I guess I do. This taught me a lesson as this item seemed to have languished in the display case for a bit longer than it should. Overall, it's a really good place to try different dim sum. A word of warning - Italian desserts might be saved for another place.

The $10 lunch special is pretty decent, I got their sesame chicken and it tastes so much better than the Chinese takeout people are used to. Good portion of food too! Their tarot tapioca tea is so nice, and they have a nice selection of baked items! Will definitely come back

I am torn with how to write and rate this review. Here are the pros/cons. I picked middle of the road (3/5) and will let you be the judge. :) Pros: --Food was tasty considering it's so far from Chinatown (NYC) --Bakery items looked fresh and baked on site (baked cha siu bao, pineapple buns, custard tarts, wife/sweetheart cakes, etc.) --Pretty good amount of parking spaces behind the building --Clean bathroom for customers Cons: --Website prices are significantly outdated. Expect to pay an additional +$2-$4 on average per dish. --Entrees do not come with a bowl of white rice (which is becoming more and more common these days, but for what you're paying, I would expect at least a small bowl of rice should be included. It costs $2 for a small extra side of white rice.) --Not "friendly" service. They weren't "unfriendly" exactly, but they definitely weren't friendly and made us feel as if THEY were doing US a favor by selling us food. They didn't make us feel warm and welcomed. --Relatively small number of eat in tables/booths. We were passing by on a road trip, saw the good reviews and seemingly reasonable prices ONLINE, thought we'd give our business to a family owned business with a similar cultural background (Cantonese/Hong Kong lineage), and so we gave it a try. We do drive by this area of NY a few times a year, but given our experience, we probably won't be back. Go if you want some pretty decent Cantonese food in this area, but don't expect more than that.

Probably the best dimsum you'll find in the area. Nice to have it come fresh from the kitchen and it's served all day which is awesome. Service was efficient and kind.

A decent Cantonese spot... up in Albany (of all places!). They also have bakery goods like pineapple buns and other pastry. I heard the source from the city... aka Chinatown... diner-ish decor, clean and seats a good amount of people. They also have dim sum but please don't compare it to the Chinatown spots, you will be disappointed. We had their beef chow fun, that's pretty good with the right amount of "wok-hay". It was delicious. We also had a chicken & broccoli for my kids, they said it ok. Service was good, waiter spoke to us in Cantonese and joked with my kids, fun atmosphere. While in Albany - stop by!
