I’ve been going to Daruma my whole life — it’s always been my go-to for the best sushi around.
Recently I ordered some sushi rice on the side and asked about the portion size. They told me it was the same as their soup, so I went ahead assuming it would be a generous serving (soup portions are usually the larger of the two). After I paid and checked the bag, I was surprised to find the rice in a very small container. When I politely asked if this was indeed their soup size, they confirmed it was.
The food itself is still excellent, but the portion sizes feel inconsistent and a bit misleading for basic items like rice or soup. Because of that, I just can’t justify a full 5-star rating this time. Hoping they’ll take a look at standardizing portions for better value and clarity — would love to keep coming back with full confidence!

I’ve been to a lot of sushi spots in NYC and Long Island, but Daruma of Tokyo in Great Neck honestly surprised me in the best way. The vibe here is so warm and inviting, the staff actually pay attention to you, check in without hovering, and make you feel comfortable right away. It’s the kind of place where you can relax the second you sit down.
The sushi was unbelievably fresh. I’m picky about sashimi, and theirs tasted clean and smooth with zero fishy aftertaste. The tuna practically melts, and the salmon had that perfect buttery texture you only get from really high-quality cuts. The amaebi and ikura were standouts too, sweet, fresh, and not overly briny. You can tell they take their time with the prep because everything came out beautifully presented.
One thing that really impressed me was the pricing. For the quality you’re getting, it honestly feels like a steal. I’ve paid way more at places that didn’t even come close. This spot proves you don’t need to drop crazy money just to get genuinely good sushi.
It’s definitely a place I’d bring friends or family to, especially people who appreciate authentic Japanese flavors without any pretension. And yes the claw machines in the back are such a cute touch. We ended up playing after dinner and won a couple of toys, which just made the night even better.
If you’re in the Great Neck area, Daruma of Tokyo is absolutely worth checking out. Fresh food, great service, fair prices

Ordered an order of 20 pieces sashimi plate and only received 19 pieces and two of the sashimi pieces are imitation crab meat. I complained that imitation crab meat are not sashimi. Waiter indicated that they've been in business for 35 years and has always served sashimi plates with imitation crab meat as sashimi. Fortunately, I didn't need to argue long for the waiter to swap the imitation crab meat for two pieces of salmons for me, will not go back for mediocre chef.

One of my fav spots to eat lunch! I eat here almost every week and it’s been reliable and consistent with freshness every time. I always get the lunch special which includes soup and salad, overall great deal considering portion size. Honorable mentions are my favorite special rolls - the Mets, tempura udon and their salad dressing. Staff is friendly and attentive so service moves quick, which I appreciate for my limited break. Will be back next week :)
