Kohaku is my favorite Japanese restaurant. I've been coming here for over 30 years. The owner and staff are always courteous and nice. The atmosphere is cozy and there are plenty of tables for the patrons to sit down. The food is very good. I usually order the Johnnie roll which consists of crabmeat, avocado, cucumber, rolled in seaweed and topped with shredded crab meat and spicy mayonnaise. It has eight pieces and is a delicious meal especially in the summer. I also like their delicately fried shrimp tempura with tempura vegetables and sauce. Before your meal, they bring out a vegetable appetizer which is nice. I highly recommend Kohaku for lunch or dinner as well at take out.

This is it. The Katsu Curry. It’s a SIN that I’ve never tried Kohaku, living on LI for the majority of my life.I’ve pretty much given up on “Japanese” food on LI, and just settle for whatever sushi restaurant has the best value. I WAS WRONG.Coincidentally, it’s been 5 years since I last had curry in Japan, and after being burned by so many places that claim to do it right, nothing ever comes close to Japan (definitely not on Long Island). And then I found a pic in Google. My mouth was salivating, everything about the plate looked like a dish from Tokyo, I knew I was going to pop in this week. Not to mention, everyone speaks so highly of Ken and the staff.Kohaku is definitely a gem.It was one-part, time warp nostalgia, that reminded me of eating out with my parents, but now with a family of my own. Familiar, comfortable and warm.Another part, it transported me to some of my favorite restaurants I’ve eaten in Japan. All the hand written signs, the illustrations throughout, it just seems like such a place that’s been loved in. As the night went on, I saw so many happy customers walk in, each with assumed rapport with Ken. It just felt so welcoming. The katsu curry DID NOT disappoint. It was everything I wanted and more. Now, some people might think curry in general is just, okay, but this hit everything I was craving. You have to like saucy rice, crispy pork/chicken cutlet and gravy/curry.I’ve had good Japanese curry in NYC too, but this one, you can just tell it was prepared and cooked with the utmost care.(Side note I even called ahead because I didn’t see it on the menu, it’s a lunch item)I had other items too, and I’ll definitely be back to try even more, but it’s going to have to be a lot more trips, because I’ll probably just end up getting the curry again. And at $16, it’s a monster of a plate, comparable, slightly larger than most NYC places. And the sushi is legit, if Ken isn’t a dead giveaway, eat the wasabi and you’ll know immediately, “Oh it’s REAL wasabi, not horseradish.” That was such a refreshing surprise. I didn’t think real wasabi was available in NY.I can gush over Kohaku some more, but this is already so long. Get the curry. Get the sushi. Eat there. Try something new. Have a good time.

Love this place! Same owner and chef for 37 years! The fish is always so fresh and the special rolls are all so unique and very reasonably priced.

Just wow! The most authentic Japanese food I’ve had in NYC outside of Japan! The sushi has amazing and fresh quality. All dishes are so delicious and flavors bursting with deep-rooted Japanese culture. A hidden mom & pop gem. Delicious!

Apparently this store has been here for a while, because one of my relatives used to go here since I was little, approx 20 years? It's very difficult to find a place locally that has what I consider a little more authentic food you might find in other places with more variety, like California: like takoyaki or curry. The food here is very good and what's important to me is that they also have a very good menu, as a lot other places locally have similar menus to eachotherIt was delicious. If you have trouble finding parking, there's parking around back, so don't be discouraged by that like I was briefly.Parking: It's in a bit of an awkward spot, there is a parking lot right behind the store with plenty of space, so it's just a short walk up to the front.

Ordered rolls and chicken teriyaki for a date night. Rolls came out ok, not the best sushi I had but it wasn't bad. The chicken teriyaki on the other hand was a different story. Came out still sizzling which I liked but the chicken looked super bland. When I bit into it, the food confirmed my suspicions. It was still very chewy and at time I spit it out due to it being almost the consistency of store bought cooked chicken, it literally tasted like they took caterer chicken and took the skin off. The teriyaki sauce was super watery and after we left I felt super queasy.

The Dinner bento box was so good! Huge portion! Soup, salad, shrimp and veggie tempura, california roll 8 pieces,3 sushi pieces, choice of salmon or chicken. The packaging and presentation is on point. They have been around for many years.

Always come here for sushi since KuraBarn closed and never been disappointed. Yes the place is informal but it is cozy and comfortable. Personally I've been to much fancier places and this sushi beats them hands down

The physical store is very dirty and smelled like a neglected bar men's room the night we were there. Food was fair but the lack of cleanliness was a genuine turnoff. Sorry to witness obvious decline. DN Huntington Station

Cluttered, with a cult following. TAKE PICTURES of the menu because they jack up prices on bill. Have been doing this all year, then they say, "The menu is old."Place is overall a gross mess, run by three family members. I can see why most people pick up orders to go; hard to sit staring at piles of junk on and behind bar. Can only imagine what Gordon Ramsey would say.
