Our experience Adyar Anand Bhavan on Lexington Avenue was quite disappointing. Despite my love for dosa, the long wait times and average food left much to be desired. While the dosas were just ok, they didn’t quite live up to my expectations- the sambhar was very watered down and the chutney was almost flavorless. They took quite a while to get a mango milkshake - we had to wait almost 30 mins and remind the staff multiple times. It was also hard to focus on the food when the smell in the restaurant ( smoke and a strong pungent smell) was so overpowering. I hope the management takes steps to address this issue, as it really detracts from the overall dining experience

Extremely rude staff who refused to serve us coffee….I came here with my sister for the first time since we are vegetarians and we do not take onion and garlic… there was no proper jain option without onion and garlic available and since we are big fans of filter coffee we requested for some coffee. The waitress told us that they do not serve coffeee on table , however I requested for another cup of coffee while I was seated on the tavle. The waitress said that she won’t be able to serve coffee as it is against the rules of the hotel to serve to only drinks. There were a number of tables that was empty. I do not understand why cannot you serve coffee on the table while we are seated on the table already and you have empty tables.

Not as consistent as the one in NJ. Diluted version of sambar and dosa was dry.

I am travelling to NYC for a short trip, and just "found" this place. I ordered the gunpowder masala dosa - it was the best I have eaten outside of South India. Glad to have discovered this gem.

I walked by as I was deciding what to eat for lunch and noticed this place had a sign out front about lunch specials. There's a Yelp page with no reviews, so I decided to give it a shot. Once you walked inside there, it's sparsely decorated. There's a back part where the cash register is located and a room as well with a chandelier. From the menu that was handed to me of the lunch specials, I chose the Aloo Gobi lunch box, which has curry with cauliflower, potatoes inside of it, and aromatic spice. They didn't ask about the heat level, and I guess it is just mild for the less adventurous people. The meal came with papadum, which is a snack that consists of dough of black bean flour. It is deep fried or cooked with dry heat until crunchy. I was told to crunch it up and put it on my rice, which is mixed in with the curry. Last but not least, the dessert called the payasam came with it all. Sweet cardamom dessert, which is of creamy texture. All in all, I would most likely go back to try other items off the to go lunch menu.
