We went there on a Saturday evening and surprisingly got a good table as the restaurant was pretty empty when we walked in (about 6 pm for dinner). The reason i gave only 3 stars is that they didn't have high chairs - I really wish restaurants who do not want kids to come to their location should just write that on their website. My kid is very well mannered and we love trying new foods with him - he is 18 months old so he cannot sit on a regular chair (and they only have those metallic chairs no sofa or cushioned seats). I wanted to just leave but then just waited back for the food. - the food is quite nice. The servers were warm and nice - but everything was pretty delayed (though that's okay given it was a Sat eve). We left by 7- 7:15 pm

Nice overall, can be randomly slow, and sometimes I feel like the injera was made a while ago, but not a bad Ethiopian option

It's taken me a few months to do this review but I wasn't going to let this slide. On June 25, 2024, we entered this restaurant in the East Village of Manhattan (located at 338 East 6th Street) it was empty at that moment. When we ordered we were the only ones at the restaurant. Later others arrived and were served before us, over and over again. We waited about 1 hour and 20 minutes to get our food and once we got it we were very disappointed - little food and a lot of cold Ethiopian bread (I think it's called Teff Injera). When we asked for our bill the waitress brought it to us with a 20% tip already included. I'm sure she knew we were not happy! We were so upset we were only going to tip 18% even if it wasn't earned. Mined you, we were only five! In Manhattan automatic tips should only be done for a party of six or more! I will never again dine there.

Long wait time for food to be served and not so great service (not very accommodating, didn’t have many clients but asked us to sit at a very small corner table).
Authentic, chewy injera. The kitfo was good, spiced well. The meat sampler was very underwhelming, chicken undercooked, and meat in general not flavorful nor fresh. You can tell the sauce was separately prepared and then mixed with the meat.

Great food in a plain, unassuming atmospheric. One of my favorite places to go for a good meal and quiet conversation. I always get the sampler so I can try as many dishes as possible.

First time trying Ethiopian. Phenomenally good experience. Give them a try
I’ve been coming here for 15+ years since I found Awash when I first moved to the city. It is consistently the best Ethiopian food and friendly service I’ve had anywhere in the USA. I’ve tried it all over Harlem and other NYC spots, in Vegas, in SF, etc….
The flavors are always top tier, the meat tender and veggies beyond tasty, and I just love this place!!
Always a friendly smile from the staff and I’m really just grateful for this restaurant and the food they serve ?? it feels like the food is cooked with love and they want you to be happy!
Today I got the meat sampler - special tibs (beef), chicken Awash, gomen (collard greens) and the yellow split peas. Soooooo delicious!!
