Amazing place. Our favorite in NYC. Great food. Wonderful people.
I’m sure the food is good but I’ll never know because the dude at the counter made sure to be as rude as possible and target only the people in the back half of the line to stand outside in “an orderly fashion”

I absolutely dread writing terrible reviews, however it’s my duty to inform every one of the blatant robbery this place thrives on.
I absolutely love supporting small restaurants and businesses, especially those that are family owned and operated for generations. However, I don’t support the bad business they practice here.
First, it’s 2025 please provide your guests with a transparent check and bill at the end of the dining experience, not some scribble on a sheet of paper with no list prices (this practice might have worked in 1912 when the restaurant first opened)
Our waiter this afternoon gave us no time to look at the menu and wanted to rush us out to quickly seat the next table (as there was a line outside) He insisted we order the latkes, which we did. They were brought out to us in less than 30 seconds (as if they were sitting on the side under a heat lamp) they were brought out before we even ordered our main entree.
We then proceeded to order two sandwiches ($21 each, as specified on the menu, fair)
Immediately noticed this place was a cash cow and wanting to push people in and out as quick as they can. After about 10minutes after our sandwich’s arrived to our table, we were hit with the bill ($79) I kindly asked out waiter if tax and tip were included, in which he told me “it was not”. I kindly asked for a breakdown, as there were no legible words written on the bill (this is also mentioned by other reviewers below)
So I did the math with the waiter and asked:
“if two sandwiches at $21 each, were the latkes you pushed on me $37?”
He admitted to have miscalculated and overcharged us, however, it’s extremely uncomfortable and embarrassing to have this type of conversation to a waiter in a busy restaurant.
I paid what I owed and left
PLEASE AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS UNLESS YOU WANT TO PAY A FORTUNE FOR A MEDIOCRE BAGLE!
Transparency, Honesty and Quality are how you ensure repeat customers, I guess that’s why everyone there was a tourist visiting the Upper West Side

Appetizing, at the temple. Not cheap, and cash only. Maybe this is why they're still in business and the other places aren't.
Update: had the sable, Nova, and sturgeon combo. Next time I think I'll stick with Nova.

In my opinion the best pastrami sandwich in New York.
It is a neighborhood restaurant, not touristy, with traditional Jewish and American dishes. The service is excellent, the food healthy and tasty and the environment welcoming and warm. In a not very touristy area of New York but absolutely worth visiting

We came here 5 yrs ago and I loved the place, 1930's atmosphere, nice food, but I visited again and it was awful, the latkes were so bad, they were gummy and lacked flavor, the frozen trader Joe ines are actually better, the matzo ball soup was depressing and these were probably the worst bagels I have ever had. MY HUSBAND SAID THE PASTRAMI WAS GOOD THOUGH. One out of four plates, sadly most of the food did not live up to any good jewish cooks expectations

Without a doubt, the best bagel I've tried in the city.
Great quality smoked fish on a freshly baked bagel. The ambiance is an old style deli. It's cramped inside, especially over the weekend, but the staff is great, very fast and somehow it all runs smoothly.
Cash only!!! I didn't read the sign and didn't have any cash. The owner at the cash register was kind enough to keep my order on the side so that I could go withdraw some cash.

The Gravlax was absolutely sensational, and my partner described his pastrami Reuben as the "perfect sandwich." Hard to beat that! Plus the service is top notch

Rude waitstaff, overpriced and mediocre food, cramped dining space. Go literally anywhere else in this neighborhood, there are a ton of better options.
