Hi! Today I decided to try this place out as the line was long and was intrigued by the “Japanese comfort food” branding. I ordered the Japanese fried chicken with fries and spicy mayo. The spicy mayo was amazing but the chicken was very mushy and extremely sweetened. I also ordered a side of fries and found 3 pieces of brown hair!! I knew for sure it wasn’t mine as I have black hair! Overall I was disappointed and dissatisfied by the food

What happened? Last year, my fav hot Honey Nanban chicken go to lunch sando used to have a fresh bun (see pic). It was so jam-packed with flavorful ingredients. I've been back only to find the chicken flavor profile has gone downhill, and a packaged, processed martins bun was replacing the fresh brioche ..ugh! Bring back the original recipe, please! Well, what can I say? We came here for a quick bite — my mom went for a small snack: a deep-fried rice triangle with shrimp. Unfortunately, it didn’t impress. The flavor was bland, and the portion tiny for what it cost.

My burger wasn’t much better. Edible, sure — but completely forgettable. No finesse, no standout elements, just something to fill the stomach.

Given that this is part of a food court with plenty of other options, it’s hard to justify coming back. The whole thing had a bit too much of that tourist-trap vibe. You’re better off looking one stall further.

Their foods surpassed my expectations. I expected fast food-grade quality, such as salty, greasy fried foods. No! They were actually, legitimately delicious. The fried rice was crispy and the scallops and shrimps on top with sauce amazingly enhanced each other’s flavor. The chicken karaage was crispy outside and tender inside, and moderately salty. I enjoyed dining near the water.

Dropped in here on my last visit to New York and fell in love with their “Japanese” fried chicken! Amazingly juicy, tender and crisp. We also loved the sashimi crispy rice and the view here is outstanding.

The Chicken was delicious and super juicy. Very oily though so I suggest putting it on paper napkins to absorb some of the oil and add something else to your meal. The Scallion Mayo was great with the chicken.

Anne Hathaway did not spit in my food.

The classic original chicken sandwich is a generous portion w/ four pieces of Karage, Japanese-style dark meat chicken. I split them up & dipped them into the shisho verde as shown. The sake is a little pricey, offered at restaurant prices. A fun casual dining experience!

Not the Bessou I Remember

I used to love going to Bessou back in the day, so when I came across this location inside the market, I was excited to give it a try. I ordered my go-to dish — the karaage — along with a sushi rice bowl, but spending nearly $80 here turned out to be a huge mistake.

The karaage was incredibly disappointing. It was overcooked, almost burnt, and so dry and hard that it completely lacked the juicy tenderness karaage is known for.

The sushi rice bowl was even worse. It was loaded with daikon and pickled vegetables, with hardly any sashimi to speak of. What little sashimi there was tasted off — not fresh, with both the temperature and flavor being completely wrong. To top it off, they used smoked salmon instead of sashimi salmon, which made no sense and felt lazy for a dish like this. And the rice? Soggy and stale. It was honestly inedible. At that point, I would’ve been happier with a $15 poke bowl somewhere else.

It’s such a letdown to see how far the quality has fallen. Bessou used to be a place I truly loved, but this experience left me frustrated and disappointed. It’s disappointing to see a place I once loved lose what made it special.

The host, Tyrin made sure that we were happy with our experience here. The crispy rice sushi is great too, especially the scallop.

Helpful staff and delicious crispy rice sushi. At first we weren’t happy with our order, the man at the front was under standing and refunded us. They also went a step above and brought us two additional crispy rice sushi to ensure we left satisfied.

I would recommend the crispy sushi on your next visit to pier 57.

The Nori Fries at Bessou are a revelation, transforming what is typically a casual bite into something unexpectedly pleasant. From the moment you take your first bite, it's clear that this dish is not just any ordinary food but an exquisitely designed masterpiece. The texture, framed by its salty and savory nori, sets the tone for the impeccable experience that follows.

Inside, the fresh potato is soothing, with a soft, ambient texture that avoids the overly crumbly consistency that plagues typical fries. Each bite is a harmonious blend of contrasts, where the crisp outer layer meets the tender, almost buttery interior. This balance makes every mouthful a delight, with just the right amount of give under your teeth, enhancing the sensory experience.

The flavors and tones of the brown and light green BBQ sauce and scallion mayo create a calm, clean taste that is both refreshing and comforting. The scallion mayo, with its subtle oniony bite, provides a creamy counterpoint to the crisp nori, while the BBQ sauce, bold and spicy, adds a layer of complexity without overpowering the dish. Together, these elements work in perfect harmony, offering a refined, yet approachable flavor profile that elevates the fries from a simple side dish to a highlight of the meal.

Each fry is meticulously seasoned, ensuring that the nori’s umami-rich taste is present in every bite, while the sauces are thoughtfully portioned to enhance rather than drown the delicate flavors. The result is a dish that surprises and delights, making the humble French fry an unforgettable part of the Bessou dining experience.
