Spectacular vegan soul food and friendly staff. We loved everything, but if you pressed me for a favorite, that’s a toss up between the cowboy caviar and the grits. 💚
Was packed. Great service. Interesting menu.
Our party tried several things on the menu (portions on the smaller side) )and they were all very good. TThe only thing we didn’t like were grits. The do a lot with a small space but the area that stars seats 6 was cozy and private but lacked ambiance.
Every dish was delicious! Cadence delivered on every aspect. We arrived with no reservation and were seated at the bar within minutes. We ordered the wedge salad, green chile Mac, Cajun grits, and Nashville hot chicken sandwich. The salad came first and was amazing! The dressing they use for it was fantastic. I would literally go here again just for the salad. Next came the green chilli Mac which was quickly eaten. Love the breadcrumbs on top. Next was the Cajun grits with banana blossom catfish. The grits came with corn which wasn’t mentioned on the menu so I just placed it to the side. Super flavorful dish. Highly recommend. Last came the chicken sandwich which was great as well. Excellent dining while in NY.
The place and staff were great, but something about the fancy soul food doesn't quite work for me personally. It was delicious but maybe a bit small. We were instructed that food was supposed to be shared, but some of it was quite hard to share tbh😄I'll probably give it another shot in the future
Great food, lovely atmosphere and attentive service. Fried lasagna was excellent. The prices are a bit high.
Cadence is one of the top vegan restaurants in NYC, serving upscale vegan soul food. I visited for the third time, to try the original menu that made them famous. In January 2025 they will be replacing the WHOLE menu, so this was my chance to try these dishes one last time. I absolutely loved the smoked grits, and was delighted by how flavorful the wedge salad was (with the perfect amount of vegan bacon and vegan ranch dressing). The sangria was the best I’ve ever had, it has a body to it that makes all other sangrias seem watery. I also enjoyed the buffalo oyster mushroom sandwich, the fried green tomatoes, the buttermilk cornbread, and the cobbler for dessert. (Yes, this is all 100% vegan!) This menu will go away completely on Jan 1, 2025…so I highly recommend at least one last visit to try these epic dishes. I’ll be back in early January to try the new ones - I have no doubt they will be equally delicious. The dining room is also beautiful, making this a great date spot, but also appropriate for a group outing or even a work dinner. I love Cadence, and can’t wait to return!

Easily the top vegan restaurant in NYC. Service is always great, chef is one of one. I’ve tried everything on the menu at least once and there is nothing that doesn’t impress.

I'm used to comfort food coming in big portions so it was a little disappointing to see the size of plates, especially for the high prices. However, everything was tasty and I enjoyed my meal very much!
This is healthy food according to Shanarri Freeman. Food products are regulated and can’t make false claims. The same should be true for restaurants. Shame on her, especially given that she went to school for medicine. I lost respect for the James Beard foundation.
I ate here and it was ok I guess. I’m writing this review because this food is the farthest thing from healthy like she claims.

Made a reservation, came in and was being set at the bar. When we asked about a table, the response was "I have other reservations and yours is for the bar." I pulled up my reservation and it did not have a specific seating assignment. This was the first of two distinct non truths from this man. Our server was AMAZING. She was attentive and helpful. That is where the praise ends. The food was just mediocre at best and the fact that this host decided to just flat out misrepresent the truth is something I can't and will not ever forgive. We weren't rude, nor did we make a scene or skip out on the bill. We tipped generously made a note of the mistreatment and vowed never to return. We were seated and had ordered well before the couple celebrating there anniversary. Yet the dessert that we ordered we were told was sold out. To watch the host bring it as well as another dessert to that couple. When we asked what it was, and how they had obtained it, his response was, there was one left and it was a first come first serve bases. Except we were there first and ordered first. This was the second misrepresentation of the truth. Overall the opinion is, unless you are friends or acquaintances of this establishment, don't hold any high expectations for treatment. Very disappointing to say the least.
Edit to your response to this review:
Sir, there where two waiters and a host checking on that Anniversary table every 15 minutes like clock work. We know because we literally timed it. Our Order was our Complete order because the Waitress told us that it was the only way to order. So to say that we attempted to order the dessert later is yet another misrepresentation. There Anniversary, My Birthday!
Then there's the arrogance of your food. So, the plating is very nice, the explanations superb. The actual execution of the dishes however, leave something to be desired. You're cornbread was like eating pound cake, a dessert, not a course meal. Sauces were water thin, edges of the lasagna burnt, middle undercooked, oil used to fry the oysters seemed to have not been changed in a while. Then there was the lack of consistency throughout the dish pertaining to texture and flavor.
After reading most of your reviews there's a pattern of behaviors identified. For the price point, and what you claim to be family style dining. There was only one dish bought out that would be considered shareable, and that would be the corn cake. I can't call it cornbread because again, it was like eating pound cake. After sharing your appetizer sized portions, priced as main dishes, we were not impressed. You do a lot to portrait a fine dining experience. But in all honesty, this was not our experience. I wouldn't call it personal, I would just call it a general arrogance of the service you think is delivered versus what you actually do.
We are not the first to have this opinion of your establishment, and seemingly will not be the last. As far as the reservation being for the bar! I can't ever recall having to make a reservation for bar seating at any fine dining establishment. I've been given the option to wait at the bar as a table becomes available. But for a system to auto assign bar seating? That's a first. In all honesty, if it would have notified me of that nuance, I would have canceled the reservation.

Came here on a Friday night after a long day, and it was the perfect place to relax and enjoy a fun and delicious meal. We had several of the smaller plates to share, and enjoyed them all; it was nice to be able to try several things, and we found 3 small plates and one bigger one was enough for two of us. Atmosphere was cozy but hip and fun, and service was excellent. Standouts were the sorrel sangria, smoky grits, and collard wraps.
Vegetarian options: Loved the smoky grits and collard wraps

This food was INCREDIBLE. As a vegan foodie, I usually feel like I have tried it all already BUT Cadence did it’s big one here. Cornbread, fried oyster mushrooms and waffles, fried lasagna, jambalaya rice balls, buffalo oyster mushroom sandwich - ALL SUPER YUMMY. Best vegan meal I have out at a restaurant in a while. The price is worth it!
