I recently discovered Chatti and when visiting New York it was a restaurant that was on my list. It was a great place to eat authentic South Indian Kerala food. We got to try Beef Dry Roast, Kerala porotta, Mango fish curry, Mutton biryani and for dessert Cloud Pudding. The food tasted delicious but felt the quantity was less.
Overall was happy with the experience , the service was great and the food was excellent!
It’s written open till 11 but kitchen closes at 9:30, beware and plan accordingly.
I'm a really picky eater and I'm sensitive to spice, so I was afraid I wouldn't find anything I liked here. Wanted to challenge myself to have something new. EVERYTHING I had here was delicious! Special shout out to the beef and peppercorn dish, which was probably the best beef I've ever had in my life. All of the dishes had great, complex flavors. The okra curry was a bit too spicy for me, but my partner loved it. The beef curry was also great. It was a splurge for sure, but we have no regrets.
I would like to preface this by saying that this is the food of my people and I am appreciative of this love letter to Malayali/Keralan food, especially those dishes that are typical to the St Thomas Christian community of Kerala. The menu is extensive and caters to people who want the classics done well as well as some creative dishes. A quick note about our food is that there is a focus on balance. Some dishes like the red fish curry or beef fry are incredibly complex but some dishes like aviyal, thoran etc are simpler and meant to be in harmony with some of the more complex flavours. For those who are unfamiliar with Keralan food it might be worth it to ask for recommendations to optimise experience.
The dishes were DELICIOUS, very authentic and presented well. It took me back to summers with grandmother.
In summary, this is not a place you come for standard fare butter chicken/garlic naan combo. Our food is notoriously difficult to find or executed poorly/inaccurately including a lot of Indian restaurants that do attempt to serve it. Chatti executes well on the vision of introducing Kerala food to people who are unfamiliar to it and keeping people who are used to its complex flavours happy.
Recommend their apps! Nice and spicy!
I ordered fish curry, Kerala rice, Idukki potatoes, fish cutlets and the drinks of course.🍹🍺 My friend ordered chicken curry and porotta. The two of us shared the food and we loved everything, especially the fish cutlets, fish curry and the porotta. We received complimentary tapioca and it was delicious. We had Palada for dessert. Portions were small, but it was enough. I was falling asleep on the train on my way home, since I was stuffed. I plan to take my colleagues there soon. It is only two blocks from my office. So, very convenient. Only thing is you will need to make reservations, because it does get crowded in the middle of the week also.
The whole ambience was very nice. The girl who took the orders recommendation was great. The portions were small though for the price we pay. Of course, we are dining in New York City. But karimeen polichadu had the gravy which was very sweet. I felt tomatoes and spicy masala was missing. Prawns with coconut pieces was very good with a tinge of tamarind. Mutton biryani was nice with ghee and mint flavor but the mutton was hard. Again the portion was very less for the price.
What an authentic Indian food right in midtown! Loved it!!!
We had an amazing experience at Chatty! The small plates concept is brilliant — perfect for tasting a variety of flavors. The fish curry and paal kappa were absolutely delicious.
I’d been spotting this place on my Instagram feed for a while, and when we finally visited in NYC, it completely exceeded my expectations.
Chef Regi Mathew was incredibly courteous and generously offered us several tastings, which made the experience even more special. Every dish we tried was fantastic. Definitely a must-visit!
