You cannot find this type of detroit-style pies as good as here anywhere in the city. Good variety, and good service.

After years of traveling around the country and the world and searching out great spots that care deeply about what they serve, I’ve committed to highlighting places I love. Most everyone loves pizza - I’m right up there in the top 0.1 percentile of pizza fanatics. Living in NYC, I’ve been fortunate to eat at almost every one of the great spots - in all five boroughs. Tonight my daughter and I wanted to try deep dish at Emmett’s on MacDougal. I’ve eaten at this Emmett’s before - but had the thin crust. It was great. I love deep dish. I travel to Chicago for work regularly and have tried most of the greats there too (Pequods is my favorite). Emmett’s on grove is legit! Delicious. We got the traditional sausage, peppers and onions and it was dead on. It was saucy, the sausage had a little spice, and the crust was buttery greatness. The vibe here is great and I would highly recommend a stop here.

One of the best tavern thin pie in town, compared to the location on Grove, this spot feels more casual and bar-like which is awesome. Small space with very limited seating so highly recommend make a reservation (even on a weeknight).

If you are looking for authentic Chicago deep dish in NYC, this is absolutely the place. I’ve been a regular here for a while because I genuinely crave their pizza. The 30-minute bake time (and wait) doesn't bother me at all—it's usually worth it.
I’m giving 4 stars instead of 5 only because the consistency varies slightly; every once in a while, the deep dish comes out a little soggy on the bottom. When it’s on point, it’s easily a 5-star meal. Still the best spot in the city to satisfy that craving.

This place changed my view on deep dish. I recommend the Cheese Louise, a side of fries, and a root beer. Perfection 🤌🏼. The Cheese Louise has the perfect ratio of ingredients that balance it out so well. The cheese on the crust to give it that extra crunch is delicious. And then you have the fries, which make you never want to eat fries from anywhere else ever again. 🤤 It's worth traveling far from so as a FYI, the Cheese Louise has a time limit for when you can order. I believe you can't order it after 4 pm. It does take a while to make, but it is definitely worth it.

Emmett’s has a great vibe. Cozy, quaint, and the staff was genuinely friendly. It feels like a place you want to like, especially since it’s one of the few spots known for Chicago deep dish.

The food, though, missed badly.

I started with the burger and fries. Both were aggressively salty. Not “seasoned,” not “bold,” just straight-up over salted to the point where it drowned out everything else. I wrote it off, assuming the pizza would redeem the experience.

It didn’t.

The deep dish looked promising, but the flavor was surprisingly bland, and there was an odd taste I couldn’t ignore. I even took it home to give it a fair second chance. That’s when it became obvious what was wrong. The mozzarella layer is absurdly thick, easily two to three times thicker than the crust. It completely throws off the balance. Every bite is just cheese. No structure, no contrast, no payoff.

It’s a strange execution choice and, frankly, makes the pizza hard to enjoy. Deep dish should be rich and balanced, not a solid block of mozzarella with everything else buried underneath.

Good service, good atmosphere. But the food, especially for a pizza place with this reputation, just doesn’t hold up.

Listen, if you are a minority hear me out. The music may not reach you, but eventually it reached me and I sat there to respect the whole experience as a whole. But this is the most upscale, but best pizza place I've been to in years. I've traveled many states and this is top tier. The deep dish Pizza is good, with real handcut fries; Yes I've had processed fries advertise as hand cut fries. They sell good food, wines and small spirits cocktail list, not just an expensive brand. Thank you to the host, bartender and waiter who runs the bar like its easy doing all these jobs. Noah was top tier! Respect to him every business owner would want him on board. He runs it all.

Need a Chicago hotdog fix, but don't want to get on a plane. A fabulous hotdog with a generous portion of crispy fries served at Emmett's.

The panache with which Gabe sliced and served our Cheese Louise was nothing less than masterful. Emmett’s will murder you with cheese and your dying words will be, “please don’t stop.”
