Gohan-ya is the same place as A Lovely Day, got their salmon+2 sides dinner entree. It tasted like something I could easily make at home.Waiters and waitresses are friendly and attentiveThey only take AmEx or cash which was a bummer, had to use the ATM in their restaurant

The food was disgusting!!!! It was garbage and was a monstrosity it’s a culinary abomination I would never recommend and the place was so dirty and smelled like something died! Also they copied the name of the former restaurant “gohan”

Nice waiter but this google listing is just fully inaccurate and should be taken down. Gohan-ya no longer exists as a restaurant. None of the pictures or reviews here reflect reality, because Gohan-ya has been taken over by Lovely Day which serves tasty Thai food, but disappointing Japanese food on a small side-menu titled Gohan-yaI came here for some Japanese comfort food (the curry that gohan-ya was known for) and was given a runny broth with sichuan peppers and a fork to eat it with. It wasn’t awful but certainly wasn’t what was advertised or something I’d ever order again. Also they only take cash or Amex here

i ordered delivery from here today and it was very late but honestly the food was so good i couldn’t begin to be mad. it tastes like home cooking, but prepared by someone with professional skill. it made me feel cozy inside. <3

The salmon Bowles sashimi quality isn't the best. Chikarashi has much better quality sashimi for the price.Chicken teishoku set is underwhelming. It doesn't come with miso soup or rice which was my fault for not noticing the add on... however japanese food not coming with rice is confusing I was not aware of the gluten-free identity of the restaurantGohan-ya started sharing the same restaurant space with the Thai restaurant lovely day around 2020. When reading reviews take note of the date.

The curry wasn’t Japanese curry, and fried chicken was hard to chew. Not worth trying.

They advertise japanese style curry but what they served us was more Thai or Indian style curry (see photos). I did like the chicken a lot that we added onto the curry for $4 extra. I did like the kubota pumpkin soup. Its a chill place but the food took too long to come out and its not described properly (not true japanese style curry). They also lose a star from me for being “cash only / american express only”.

Had some coconut curry soup, really hit the spot on a freezing day! Everything was super fresh, and scrumptious!!!

I ordered my food on Seamless. I went to pick-up my order. I got home and the order was wrong. I was really disappointed in the dry/overcooked salmon and how the dishes were prepped. Just sadly thrown into the container... Rice was also not great. I know Japanese food well and this is not what home-cooked Japanese food is like.

I actually came here about a year ago, but I haven't stopped thinking about my meal since. A friend and I had planned to go to a trendy restaurant in the neighborhood, but we didn't have reservations and the wait time was too long. We ended up walking around until we came across Gohan-ya and decided to give it a try. Wow! I'm so happy we found this place. Our food was fresh, wholesome, seasonal, and extremely delicious--the sort of food I wish I could cook at home, but with an elegance and quality that I could never replicate. There are also lots of strong vegetarian options on the menu. My only complaint is that the portion sizes were a little small. I'll definitely come back next time I'm in NYC! And maybe get two entrees :)

This place is such a gem. Quality is so good and I will be ordering from here as a weekly meal- their bowls are good both the chicken and miso salmon. Brown rice is cooked perfectly and their ginger kabocha squash soup was tasty and filling. Feels healthy but not compromising on taste. A tad expensive but worth it.

Dropped by this quiet, peaceful little restaurant Saturday evening for a light dinner. With the dim lighting and calm music, the space presented itself as a lovely, cozy place for a date night. Gohan-ya serves healthy Japanese home cooking at its most aesthetic level. There are bowls, salads, sushi, and set plates that consist of a protein and your choice of two sides. I ordered the Hamachi Oshizushi ($13) which is pressed yellowtail sushi made from layers of toppings and rice that are placed in a mold and compressed into neat stacks. The pressed sushi came with a shiso leaf sandwiched in between two layers of rice, and topped with a thin slice of salmon or tuna (they were out of yellowtail during my visit). Since it was my first time eating this type of sushi, I have nothing to compare it to, but I will say that I felt the amount of rice was too much to enjoy. There was a good amount of vinegar in it, which partially helped to digest everything but I couldn't really enjoy the slice of fish or shiso leaf because all I could taste was the rice. Overall, I'm still willing to give Gohan-ya another try. They are more known for their bowls and set plates anyway. Dockingan extra star because they only take cash or Amex.

Really intimate space with seating in the front as well as the back. Sat at the bar seats and had the mushroom salad, sushi and beef bowl which were all really amazing. Definitely a place to have dinner for one of those quiet nights. Perfect for smaller groups.
