Il Mattone

Damn. This place closed. I loved their Shrimp Parm Hero, which was the best that I have had in New York. Their Grandma's Pie was pretty great too. The original Il Mattone, which is now on Beach Street, still is in operation and they still deliver. But I am going to miss John and his crew from the West Village operation.

I need to add another note about Il Mattone. I had a dear friend who made the best eggplant parmigiana in the world. Layers of thin fried eggplant slices, sauce and melted mozzarella cheese. Sadly, my friend died of lung cancer from 9/11 contamination and so did my ecstatic pleasure of eating her eggplant parmigiana. Until Il Mattone. Their eggplant is the closest to hers I have ever had. If you seriously love eggplant, do not hesitate to sample Il Mattone's.

We are stuck sheltering in place because of the COVID-19 pandemic. We ordered from here a second time and we were glad. The portions were huge and the food was good. I had chicken parmigiana with Fusilli pasta. My SO had chicken Francaise (chicken served in a lemon butter sauce) with house salad.
