I went alone to treat myself for my birthday (after work so maybe not dressed to their standard) and was mocked the entire time by the staff in a language they thought I didn’t know. As someone in the industry it was truly disgusting how these people chose to treat a patron. I read my book the entire evening and didn’t bother anyone. Do better

I enjoy having dinner here for my birthday 🎂 My grand-daughter took my wife and I here for an excellent / delicious dinner. The staff provided a wonderful experience. The menu has very good selections to choose from.
We will return the next time when coming to NYC.

Il Mulino Downtown on West 3rd in the West Village delivers classic Italian cuisine with rich, flavorful dishes and elegant presentation. I loved the fresh pastas, seafood, and attentive service. The warm, inviting atmosphere makes it perfect for date nights or special dinners, and every visit feels satisfying and memorable.

Il Mulino in the Village is old-school Italian dining at a level that most restaurants in this city cannot touch. Before you even order they bring out a spread of complimentary appetizers garlic bread fried zucchini chunks of Parmigiano that set the tone for what is about to happen. This kitchen does not hold back. The veal chop is enormous and perfectly prepared. The pasta with white truffle sauce is rich and aromatic. The osso buco falls off the bone with a flavor that tells you it has been braised for hours by someone who learned this from their grandmother. The room is intimate almost cramped but that is part of the charm. You are close to the other tables the energy is high the waiters are old-school Italian professionals who have been doing this for decades and know exactly how to take care of you. The wine list is deep Italian with bottles from every major region. I come here when I want a meal that feels like an event. Not a quiet dinner. An event. The kind of meal where you lean back after dessert and realize you just had one of the best dining experiences of the year. Il Mulino does not chase trends or seek social media attention. It serves extraordinary Italian food in a room full of people who know exactly where they are. That is enough. That is everything.

Hands down the best dining experience I’ve had in NYC. Was greeted at the table by rounds of appetizers we didn’t even order, nor had to pay for (bruschetta, cheeses, fried zucchini, garlic bread, and a bread basket). Then the manager came over and explained each of his favorite menu items in incredible detail. Felt so authentically Italian and just a beyond lovely experience. Went for my birthday and would recommend everyone try for a special occasion. Food was best Italian ive had (outside of Italy itself).

Dimly-lit NYC-style classic Italian restaurant with excellent service. Staff constantly availed themselves to us without overdoing it (quite a tactful feat). We had a very lovely and lengthy dinner. It is fairly expensive even for the area so I would restrict visits to special occasions.

Overall it was great, I would come back.

I wrote this 10 years ago and it still holds true today:

In the incredibly competitive Manhattan Restaurant & Foodservice Industry, there is a beacon that shines far beyond the dark incestuous waters of the common modern-chic foodie-targeting “it” eating establishments that pop up and shut down quicker than a revolving door.

There is a place that has been catering to the seekers of old world charm and simple dishes prepared the same way for hundreds of years with the freshest best quality ingredients money can buy. This Zagat-rated Greenwich Village institution has been delighting local and international clientele alike for over 20 years.

Given the Zagat accolade and the relentless pursuit of perfection in the kitchen, it would be inconceivable that this restaurants success be due to anything else… but it is. These days, to be successful in any Industry, including this one, it requires more than simply quality ingredients and warm surroundings. It requires a tremendous amount of passion, dedication and above all, social customer devotion crowned with a limitless source of enthusiasm. All these traits are personified by on man: CLAUDIO.

Maitre D Claudio is the reason the tables are always full, reservations have to be booked weeks in advance and that people from around the world, including myself, flock to his establishment every time they are in town. His clientele doesn’t bother to look around for new dining venues to explore on nights that they feel the craving for old-world traditional Italian cuisine.

The family atmosphere warmth felt when walking through the door makes first time guests instantly look forward to their return visit. The tall welcoming Maitre D awaits with open arms greeting everyone by first name exchanging more than just pleasantries, remembering where guests are from and what they talked about during their previous visit. It is this amazing welcoming quasi-family aura that ensures patrons become lifetime return guests and spread the word to any friends and family visiting the city.

Il Mulino is my go-to spot for special occasions when I’m in NYC. Tucked away on West 3rd, it’s everything you want when you're looking to celebrate - warm, old-school service, a lively but intimate vibe, and food that never misses. The pasta is always cooked to perfection, the wine list is solid, and they make you feel genuinely taken care of. I’ve marked birthdays, anniversaries, and milestones here, and every time it delivers. If you’re looking for classic Italian with white-tablecloth flair and some real soul behind it, this is the place.
