A real OG Chinatown bakery, Manna House has been open for over 40+ years. I remember when I was a kid, my mom would buy char siu bao (roast pork buns), ham & egg and hot dog bao from here for quick breakfasts in the morning before school and for after-school snacks. Over the years, we've ordered lots of pastries and birthday cakes. The cake is standard Chinatown yellow sponge cake that is light and airy and you can have your choice of fruit fillings. Even when we got married, our 5-tier wedding cake was from Manna. Recently, my sister gave me a $10 gift card and reminded me to use it. It was mid-morning on a Sunday and I had to wait 10 minutes for the next batch of char siu bao. They only made a dozen and I bought half of them. I don't know why we stopped coming here over the years, but it's a lot of little things that are discouraging. Manna doesn't make large batches of bao during the day and they tend to sell out quickly. By afternoon, most items are sold out. When you do come in early, you order your bao and coffee or nai cha (milk tea) at the counter and many times rude customers come in after you've been waiting on line, yell their order and they get served first! SMH Some of the other bakeries in Chinatown like Fay Da and Tai Pan offer more variety and have full bins all day. You get to choose your own and it's much more civilized. The taste and texture of the buns at Manna are not as good as the others and definitely are not the same when reheated the next day. Fay Da and Taipan have the edge in their recipes, but Manna prices are slightly better.

I bought a custard bun and a roast pork bun. The custard bun turned out to be 'pre-manufactured' - not fresh baked by the bakery. The custard was lacking in flavor and quantity, the sugar topping was not crisped or tasty. Sadly, the pork bun was also lacking in quantity of filling. The pork pieces included two big chunks of fat! This is unacceptable. When poor quality is so clearly concealed, I have to believe the bakery attitude towards customers is derisive and downright abusive. When there are so many good places, Manna will never get my business again!

Super moist Swiss roll cakes. The lemon and the chestnut filling are delicious! Not too sweet and reasonably priced.

I am obsessed! Golden steamer was out of custard buns and I was still craving a custard filled something so I stumbled across Manna and I'm so glad I did. Got a coconut bun and pineapple bun with custard. Coconut bun was deceivingly dry so probably won't get that again but THE PINEAPPLE BUN. I will be having dreams about it. The bread was SO soft (different texture from the coconut) and the crunchy topping was so delicious. The custard was more of a buttery taste as opposed to vanilla/eggy but I honestly was a fan. Will definitely come back for the pineapple buns.

when I'm in New York, I try to make it a point to pick up some pastries at Manna House Bakery before I head home to Baltimore. I've been doing this for almost 10 years. The place have very low employee turnover. some of the employees recognizes me when I go into the bakery. The bakery is small inside and the place is usually busy. Theit egg tarts, baked roast pork buns and cakes are awesome. It's always fresh and baked on the premises.

I've been craving for egg custard buns and was so happy to come across Manna House on a random trip to NY. They have absolutely amazing buns and I practically drank the whole thing in one swallow. I bought a few other things which were all good but I'd forgotten them already because egg custard buns!

Been coming here since i was a kid, so thats at least 30+ years. Many fond childhood memories coming here with my grandparents, uncles, parents, siblings, the whole family. This is my favorite bakery, above all the franchised ones, western style ones, local ones- just doesn't beat the sweet and soft Manna buns. Just love! Please don't change the recipe. We used to also get birthday cakes here for as long as I can remember. You know, the one with the fruit in the middle? Yup. Here is a pic of all my favorites buns. Love you Manna bakery!

Most buns were sold out by the late afternoon - I grabbed a coconut bun to try on my walk home. The breading wasn't nearly as fluffy and soft as I would've liked, but I enjoyed the coconut concoction inside. Ideal amount of sweetness to pair with the bread.

My favorite place for baos and sponge cake. They speak English and very friendly. Got char siu, custard, red bean, and pineapple buns. All excellent!
