Ordered Katsudon. I’m Japanese so I know what an authentic one is. Pork is surprisingly dry and hard to chew. Also tasteless itself, way too plain. I’m very sorry but this place became less authentic

I love this place. Feels very authentic and the staff are very kind. The meals are well rounded with lots of variety of flavors, textures, and ingredients that create a nice overall eating experience. It's cohesive. I went back to another ootoya location the next day because I had such a great time.

I asked for a $20 sake flight, which they didn’t had. They offered a different selection, but I was charged $30 without any notion of the price change. We were a group of people and they charged 3x$30 instead of $60 total. It seems like ripping off customers is normalised in NYC, but I don’t think it should be. Food was average, not worth the price in my opinion.

Made a reservation in advance to be here. The place is always crowded.Good food, more on the expensive side.Food is not spicy. The gravy of most of the dishes is delectable.

For the price I expected better food. I ordered a pork katsu, the meat was a bit overcooked and tough, the rice was mushy, the miso soup was a bit bland, nothing really stood out as worthwhile. The menu is a bit annoying, maybe this is just a typical Japanese way to eat lunch but I just wanted to order one main dish and maybe a couple starters to share, the starters were so small that this wasn't really doable. They were priced as if they were full size appetizer dishes but the we're barley enough for one person. Also, we thought about getting some sake for the table but the pricing was a bit extreme. Sake comes in a really small bottle so it just doesn't make sense paying $50 for the cheapest bottle on the menu. It's a beautiful restaurant but I wouldn't recommend it.

The miso soup was lukewarm and had no flavor at all, the ginger miso dressing seemed like it was made with grated ginger from a tube, the stewed chicken cutlets were all soaked in the soup stock, and there was no crunchy texture at all, and the vegetables were... Pickles that look like scraps. The customer service was not as good as in New York restaurants, and although I may have liked the rice, it was disappointing because it was so hot that it didn't feel like it was freshly cooked. It's a shame because I love Ootoya in Japan!

Came here for lunch during restaurant week. Was surprised they gave us the restaurant week menu on a Saturday as it is for weekdays only typically. They had three different sets: $30, $45, and $60. All three are three course prix fixe, with the main differences being the 2nd course. I chose the $45 course. The first course was Assortment of Appetizers, which included chicken truffle pintxos, salmon sashimi salad, and eggplant sesame sauce. The second course was Yosenabe & Bara Chirashi Don. The third course was the Original Matcha Anmitsu. This was a green tea ice cream served with Uji-matcha jelly, yuzu jelly, red beans, rice cakes, drenched in soy milk. Overall this was a solid deal and was filling.

Typically, I only eat at places with 4.5 stars. But this place is very good and deserves to be rated higher. Woot. Hope this works in raising its rating to what it deserves to be.

Apart from not bringing the mains for the entire party at the same time, this was awesome.

The food at Ootoya was AMAZING!!!! I got the sukiyaki set and I have absolutely no complaints! All of the sides and the rice options paired perfectly with the dish! I got the curry rice and was surprised by how well it paired with the sukiyaki beef.

Finally some real KatsuDon in NYC… but with a NYC price tag. In Japan, this lunch would have been $15. Here… $45. Downside of living in America. But the food was proper and delicious. They should do no tipping to really make it Japanese.
