I went to sugarfish after a show at Beacon Theatre and was told that the wait would be about an hour and a half. We were able to get seats at the bar in about 30 minutes.
Definitely it’s definitely a vibe inside. It’s a great atmosphere if you’re looking to have a nice night out. All the dishes we had were great, but the service was outstanding. This is a no tipping establishment, so I have to give a particular shout out to Lemuel. I’ve been out to eat countless times and rarely have I had service this quick and attentive. He was actually reading our minds, pulling plates out from behind the bar before we could finish our sentences lmao.
This spot checks off all the boxes!

Had been many years ago to the Midtown location, and remembered really liking it—so when some friends wanted to do dinner, I was optimistic. I get omakase fairly frequently at other places—in New York and elsewhere—and this was by far the most disappointing. To start, I find it odd that there are 2 pieces of so many of the nigiri as opposed to 12+ unique pieces you’d get at other places, but I guess this is how they do the volume of customers they do. I didn’t find any of the pieces to have any interesting or memorable accompaniments to bring out the flavors, except for one which a few of us specifically thought tasted like soap 🤢 Also found it really annoying how poorly the nigiri was packed—yes, it should be warm/room temp, but there’s no reason we should all be scooping up half of the rice after simply touching a piece.
The service was awkward and not exactly warm… they brought the second round before any of us had even finished the first, which was so weird. I’ll give one server a pass because she was clearly onboarding, but typically you’d think the server training her would show her what to do vs. what *not* to do 😅 We had to ask a few times for water, and they forgot about our bottle of wine until we asked a second time.
The last bizarre thing worth mentioning—for a place that doesn’t take reservations, it’s kind of ridiculous that they won’t even take a phone number and let you go next door for a drink whilst waiting around for 30+ minutes for a table. We’re all New Yorkers, we’re used to a wait…but it feels borderline uncivilized that—since there isn’t even space to get a drink at *their bar*—we weren’t able to comfortably wait anywhere else, either 😅 Simply unnecessary.
I’d highly recommend one of the many smaller, more high quality omakase places in the city instead of this overrated spot 😳

Avoid at all costs. Manager is incredibly rude. Stay away or it will ruin your night and possibly your life

I’ve been coming to this location for over a year and have always loved the food—it truly is excellent.
Unfortunately, the service during my most recent visit was extremely disappointing. We were told the wait would be 30–40 minutes, but that turned out to be completely inaccurate. Even after confirming via text and waiting on site, our party was skipped over another group of the same size - not the same name!!!!!
When I brought this up, the supervisor, Wendy, was unwilling to give a clear timeframe for when we would actually be seated. There WAS NO effort to acknowledge the mistake or offer even a simple courtesy like a glass of water while we waited even more.
This lack of accountability and accommodation turned what should have been a celebratory evening into a very frustrating one—especially since it was my daughter’s birthday. Based on this experience, I cannot give this restaurant a good rating despite how much I enjoy the food.

It's an intimate setting with low lights and an upscale ambiance. The food was delicious & the service was impeccable.

Really disappointing
Fish was ice cold
Rice fell apart when we tried to pick up nigiri
Everything was seasoned with chives…
Even the ginger was subpar
We won’t return

The nigirl fish slices are too small and the rice is not tightly packed. You should be able to pick up the the nigiri, invert it, and dip in in the soy sauce.
Instead you try to pick it up and the rice falls apart, no matter if you use chopsticks or your hands.
So I just take the fish off the rice, dip it, then try to keep it together before it falls apart.
This is why trained sushi chefs are a thing and not just assembly line kitchen staff assembling food.
Too much strong yuzu sauce on the masked any nuance of the actual food.
This places caters to a certain demographic. I clearly am not it.

In general the sushi is good and the service is superb. Don’t come if you’re super hungry, even the largest Trust Me option is very small. This is relatively a fine dining place.

I’m bicoastal and have spent years going to sugarfish so I was so excited when it came up to the UWS! Everything was delicious. I always get the trust me. my only note was the edamame. it was cold without salt and just felt like it was dumped out of bag.

We are here now and we couldn’t be more happy. 😊. Wendy is our server and she couldn’t be more pleasant and kind and helpful. I have had the pleasure of her presence when she worked downtown and she’s now on the upper west and I speak for the whole upper west when I say; we are fortunate to have her Sugarfish, you’re fortunate to have her on your side. I’d be remiss to not mention others that have help me too; Judy, James, Riley, Jin and Sam. They all deserve recognition as well. Thanks for such a great experience.
