“I stopped by the Hindu Temple Canteen after visiting the temple and the place delivers exactly what people say about it. The food is simple, fresh and made with the kind of consistency you only get in a temple kitchen.

I tried two plates because I was there with a friend. The pongal was warm, comforting and properly seasoned. The curd vada had a light, balanced taste and felt refreshing. The mixture on the side added a nice crunch. The dosa was crisp, not oily, and the coconut chutney tasted clean. The sambar was mild but paired well with everything.

The canteen is not about presentation. It's about honest food that feels familiar and satisfying. Portions are fair and pricing is very reasonable for New York. If you're already visiting the temple, stopping here makes total sense. It’s quick, reliable and a good break before heading back out.“

“I didn’t know which one tasted better, so I tried them all. I found 3 things I liked... I asked them their names, but it turned out that the person working on them didn't speak much English. She answered me in Spanish...I don't understand Spanish, so I ignored the name? One is filled with egg, and the more you chew it, the more delicious it gets...The other one has the same texture as mochi. It's a potato on the outside and meaty on the inside.“

“Disappointed but Still Drawn In by the Homeland Goodies

Honestly, coming to this place is a mix of emotions. It’s nice to find a variety of products and goodies from the Homeland that you don’t usually see in regular stores in the U.S. That’s probably the biggest draw. You walk in and instantly spot those familiar items that bring comfort and nostalgia.

But here’s the problem: the prices are outrageous. Even for products I know I can get in places like Washington Heights, the markup here is excessive. For example, I was excited to get a coconut dulce, but not only was it overpriced, the temperature wasn’t right. When I opened it, it had gone bad, it wasn’t even edible. That was really disappointing.

On top of that, the customer service needs serious improvement. The staff, especially the ladies working there, were rude and dismissive. Their attitude makes the shopping experience unpleasant, and the only reason you stay is because you’re hoping to grab those hard-to-find goodies.

In my opinion, if you need specific items like medicine or rare treats from back home, it might be worth a quick visit. But for everyday things like salami, cookies, or pantry staples, it’s not worth the inflated prices or the bad attitude. Definitely not a go-to spot for regular shopping.“
