I once thought this place got it right but after coming back for the third time, I find it lackluster despite my large order of Malaxiaguo. Honestly, I don't think they stir fry the drypot ingredients at all because it did not taste smokey at all nor did I hear my wok and cooking sound as I sat waiitng in the table right across from the kitchen. I think they just douse and mix it in the Mala spice behind the covered wall in the kitchen hidden from the customer's view.

This is how businesses go down by deceiving loyal customers, but then again I guess it's typical of chinese who are all about $$ and could care less about what the customers think. Typical

We usually get our dry pot from New World Mall, but since there was a Chinese New Year parade on Main Street, we decided to try this spot based on the great reviews.

When we walked in, the staff seemed busy, but they explained the process—grab a bowl, pick your ingredients from a large fridge (similar to what you’d see at a supermarket for eggs), and then they weigh everything. It was about $15 per pound, and you could choose your spice level.

Unfortunately, the food didn’t meet our expectations. It tasted more boiled than stir-fried—the broccoli and other veggies gave it away. The flavors were bland, especially for the price. We were so underwhelmed that we didn’t even bother taking our leftovers home. Definitely not worth the hype.

Someone once said, good cooking is 1000 small things done well. I can't say what makes malatang here so good, whether it's just fresh ingredients, a well-balanced broth base, or just the
unpretentious, everyman luxury of having hot food served in a clay pot, but this the best malatang spot out of the 4 others I know in Flushing (New World, Underground Mall, Union Street, and Roosevelt). Props to the guy working both cashier and service.
