Himitsu is a hidden gem in Queens, operating as a speakeasy omakase behind a Thai restaurant called Siam. Renowned for its cozy atmosphere and attentive staff, it provides an exceptional sushi experience. The beautifully curated menu features delicacies like toro with caviar toast, uni, shrimp, tamago, snapper, and even milt (cod sperm), which is surprisingly creamy. Diners can enjoy the unique presentation, including sake served in a decanter dispenser and personalized menus with candles and matches. The steamed egg, made right in front of guests, stands out for its amazing taste. Recently, the restaurant introduced a lunch menu set for $45, available only on weekends. The lunch set includes 7 pieces of nigiri with rice that is almost black, due to a vinegar-based ingredient, and a mini unagi tamago donburi that was described as smoky, sweet, and memorable. The nigiri and unagi donburi are highlights, showing the chef’s effort and creativity. However, some guests found the ambiance a bit awkward, with staff standing quietly and watching diners, which made the experience feel slightly uncomfortable. Overall, Himitsu offers a high-quality, non-pretentious dining experience with room for improvement. A standout dish is the tuna caviar hand roll, which has received praise for its excellence. Despite some quirks, it’s a place worth visiting at least once for its fresh ingredients and personal touches.
