Ordered spicy combo for pickup. Let's just I am very underwhelmed. The salmon was COOKED! And the tuna roll had bits of the cooler salmon in it. This was supposed to be a raw roll. Since it was pick up, I couldn't do anything about it until I got home. I called the restaurant and the person on the other line didn't understand what my complaint was. $20 down the tube. Maybe this was to cut cost because the salmon was going bad? Idk but I used to be a regular and now I am definitely not coming back.

Small cozy little Japanese restaurant, it seems to be family owned. I would recommend it given that the food is pretty authentic, but only 3 stars from me because the quality is not consistent. The first time I went there the food was pretty food, yet the second time my food was too salty. So give or take the quality, it could be a great restaurant or just ok.

Amazing food and very friendly staff!

Very traditional Japanese restaurant with very authentic and fresh food. Small place so service is best with fewer people

ended up here on christmas eve with the family, before catching a movie at Tinseltown. Place is small and somewhat dingy but I love off-the-beaten-path joints, cause they have the best food. so - the service here is very very lacking. not very friendly, staff had no idea how to explain what was in the dishes that they serve. couldn't tell us what the difference was between 2 similar dishes. one of our dishes was supposed to come with rice, and when ours didn't, the staff asked, 'Oh you want rice with that?' Um, yeah - it says it comes with rice, right? it looks like a family run spot. the food was decent enough but i feel i paid way too much for the food paired with the ridiculously low service.

I am giving this place a 5-star rating since I cannot give it 4.5. The reason for a 5 Star is this is AUTHENTIC Japanese food! With its a hole-in-the-wall facade, you might think twice before entering. But when you see "Yamasa" on the shoyu bottles you know that the owner has quality in mind. You also need to get beyond the somewhat gruffness of the chef (owner?) thus the 4.5 rating for those who are expecting conversation and an outgoing personality to go along with their awesome food. For whatever reason, I sense that he means well. But, for authentic Japanese food which is scarce in Rochester, I'd be more than willing to let it go. The tempura is great. The shrimp is firm which shows quality. The batter is light and crisp as it is supposed to be unless you are eating it in a soup based or sauce based dish. I had the ten don and it was not swimming in sauce like some other places. Obviously he wanted to showcase the shrimp. The rice grains had the perfect texture, whole grains that weren't mashed up. Someone had the pork katsu which was surprisingly very tender. The udon was also of high quality, cooked to perfection with a good "chew". No one left hungry. And, I can't emphasize enough that this is how Japanese food should taste. I didn't try any sushi, but I will be sure to return to give that a shot. This is a must for those who are looking for the real thing.

Best Japanese cuisine I’ve ever had. My wife and I love this place. The owner is a nice Japanese couple. So it’s a genuine Japanese restaurant unlike others. Lovely decoration makes yourself feel at home. We tried the sushi and sashimi first as always. It’s fresh and delicious. And we thought why not have something new? So we order:

This is really bad service. The food I ordered was not even available after they have put the order . The service was bad, the food is just ok, nothing special and not even good. I got stomachache after the food. really bad experience

Ordered the tempura udon soup/noodles. Pretty average, the soup didn't have as much flavor to it as other places and there wasn't a lot of soup included in the first place. Nothing really special about it.

awesome food which takes wayyyyy too long to arrive. We ordered unadon(grilled eel rice) and beef teriyaki rice, both of them was amazing, probably the best you can find in Rochester. BUT each dish takes at least 40 minutes to arrive. Our whole plan for that night was delayed because of that, but worth it!

Good Japanese food. When I was told there is a family owned Japanese restaurant and the chef is Japanese, I was excited about. It is still good sushi, just not as good as I was expecting. Still better than most Japanese restaurants in Rochester.
