Malatang is named after its key ingredient, mala sauce, which is flavored with a combination of Sichuan pepper and dried chilli pepper. The word málà is composed of the Chinese characters for "numbing" (麻) and "spicy (hot)" (辣), referring to the feeling in the mouth after eating the sauce.Unlike hot pot, which is made to order and shared only by diners at a table, malatang originates from street food cooked in a communal pot. Diners can quickly choose what they wish to eat, and either eat on the spot or take away.

Pleasantly surprised! My husband and I have been looking for a local authentic Chinese restaurant, Szechuan preferred. We ordered the spicy wontons, duck with scallion pancakes, spicy beef, double cooked pork belly and house fried rice. Everything was well seasoned, tasty, hot and fresh, made to order. The spicy peanut appetizer was my favorite. We will definitely go back again.

Food is very good, service is excellent. The tea is delicious. The first time there would def. go back. The meat was cook well and the seasoning was not overpowering.

I have no idea why it has taken me so long to try this place but I went in for my sister's birthday a few weeks ago. We ordered the wood ear mushroom salad, edamame and the Shanghai soup dumplings for appetizers. The mushrooms are reason alone to go back. My entrée was the dry pot chicken which came in a wok lit by sternos underneath and full of dried peppers with a perfect amount of Sichuan peppercorns. My mouth was oscillating between the delicious burn and the tingling...
