I visited What A Bagel Cafe in White Plains, NY to purchase a bagel. My total came to $4.95, and I attempted to pay with my debit card.

The owner pointed to a handmade sign posted by the register that read:
• “Credit card minimum $15”
• “Debit card minimum $10”

He informed me I could not use my card unless I either spent more money or paid in cash. Reluctantly, I purchased two orange juices I did not want, raising my total to $13, just to be able to pay.

For clarity:
• Under federal law, merchants may set a credit card minimum purchase, but it cannot exceed $10.
• For debit cards, no minimum purchase is permitted at all. This store’s policies are therefore illegal and in violation of Visa/Mastercard rules.

After paying, I politely told the owner: “This is ridiculous, I know your processing fees are not $5 per transaction.” Instead of addressing my concern, he responded by telling me to “shut up” in front of two other customers.

I asked, “That is how you’re going to talk to your customers?” His reply again was: “Shut up.” At that point, I stated I would not be returning and left the establishment.

This experience was both unfair and humiliating:
1. The cafe is enforcing illegal debit/credit minimums that force customers to overspend or use cash.
2. The owner’s unprofessional conduct, telling a paying customer to “shut up” repeatedly, is unacceptable for any business.

I am filing this complaint with the Better Business Bureau and sharing my experience publicly so other consumers are aware. I will also be reporting this violation to Visa/Mastercard, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and the New York Attorney General’s office.

No customer should be forced into illegal payment practices or treated with such disrespect.

This place is amazing. I did see the review about the minimum credit card charges, but this is a family business and those charges add up. The food is great. The owner is amazing. Can’t ask for a better neighborhood bagel shop.

Bagels are pretty good but a little too expensive for me.

This place is beyond awful. We came here for the first time and my daughter hit her head on the door on our way out. I want to ask for ice and they charge me one dollar no apologies. What did they say to you?

New owners, new management.

This place has definitely changed over the last 20 years ... for the better!

This is my favorite bagel spot. They have fresh muffins, bagels, sandwiches, and toppings.

If you go at the wrong time, the line can be out the door. But, it moves quickly.

This is a great spot for a bagel, breakfast sandwich or coffee!

After reading a lot of comments and seeing that people agreed the owner wasn’t very nice and that he was rude. I was a little skeptical but when I went, the owner was there. He took my order and my bagel was good. I had a great amount of cream cheese in it again

gary reback

I have never been treated as rudely as I was by the owner of this store. His English is not perfect, which is understandable, and explains some of our communication problems, but nothing excuses his behavior. In short, I asked him how long the cream cheese would stay fresh in my refrigerator. I guess he thought I was asking if the cream cheese was fresh. He became very angry. I tried again to explain my question. He just became angrier and asked me to leave his store. I am a very nice person who would never be rude to anyone. I highly recommend you shop elsewhere, or at least be very careful about how you phrase your questions so he doesn’t fly off the handle.

Worker who attended us was rude for no reason my friend simply asked for a plain bagel and his response was said in a rude tone then when we went to pay separately he immediately asked my friend if they were getting the protein bar in their hand when they weren’t even ready to check out indicating my friend was going to leave with out paying for the protein bar, never had a worker who gave this bad of service this is the first, if you’re having a bad day that’s not the customers fault! the food is great this guy is not, do better😂

At 80 I've had my share of Catskill's, NYC, Washington DC, New England and Florida bagels. And I'd rank bagels at What A Bagel Cafe, in White Plains NY, up there with the best! Their dough consistency is excellent and they put an unconventional, baker's crusted coating on them that makes their bagels simply scrumptious! Try them and enjoy!

The muffins and bagels are five stars without a doubt. The employees are so kind and friendly but the owners are SO rude. I would think twice about giving them your business they don’t appreciate it.
