On our journey to try every chip truck between Toronto and Haliburton - we finally made it to the famous Brechin landmark - Captain Jack's! Located right next to the big Grocery store and just past the train tracks on Hwy 12 - Captain Jack's is a family tradition stopover for a lot of people going to or from their cottages. We pulled in on a scorching hot day in September hoping to grab a bite and sit in the shade. Unfortunately, there were only a couple of picnic tables set up and no umbrellas at all for shade. There is a big grassy area next to and behind the chip truck and a pretty clean porta-potty nearby as well. We ordered a medium poutine ($8.50), medium onion rings ($8) and a cheeseburger ($9). It took a while for the grumpy ladies who were slaving away over the grill to get our order ready - but was it ever worth the wait! Fantastic tasting poutine, nice and crispy onion rings and a perfectly grilled cheeseburger that was absolutely delightful!! We went across the street and ate our food in the LCBO parking lot in our car in the shade of a big tree - it would've been nicer to have eaten it on the grass at the chip truck but it was just too hot. Really good food - I understand why I have always seen so many people stopping there for a bite! Highly recommended and we will definitely return!

The burger had no flavor unfortunately. I think they believe that condiments will make up for that..... unfortunately not. Maybe some garlic, salt, pepper, cayenne pepper in the patty next time with a little lemon and lime. ??

If you are passing through Brechin be sure to stop in at Captain Jacks for their fish and chips or burgers and fries. My team and I come by weekly for lunch and we are huge fans of their Banquet burgers. The prices are great and the fries and gravy are to die for ? Ill be sure to stop by soon to try that peameal on a bun!

Food was great & reasonably priced for the portion you get. Conveniently in the grocery store parking lot for a one stop shop on the road.

Love me a good chip truck, not a great experience here, similar to what others have mentioned. Service is terrible, bit of a grumpy older lady up front. Tapping the CASH ONLY sign while I dug through my wallet (tapping, said nothing). BUT most importantly the food...got the chicken fingers $8 comes with only 2 fingers (constructive criticism - raise the price slightly and add a 3rd finger or drop the price, you are going to frusrate everyone with this) that said, frozen fingers but good. Also got the cheeseburger, completely flavourless, I mean really bad, we are not picky eaters and this burger was terrible, lacked any seasoning whatsoever. Like I said, love supporting local and a good chip truck but Captain Jacks needs to make a few really important changes to retain any customership or have repeat customers. 2 meals were $30 and they charge for sauce.

Great grocery store friendly staff

Ordered the meatball sub special. The meatballs are definitely home made and not overly seasoned. The bun was the freshest bun I've had at any chip truck. And the fries were perfect. I'm seeing reviews all over the map on this one but I had a good experience with real food. and genuine farmer friendliness. They will be closing for the season after Thanksgiving. I went on Monday Sept 26 and no this is not a paid review I just call them as I see it. Update: I took one star away as they only take cash.

Awful experience, the front of house was rude while we were ordering, uttering disrespectful comments to other staff. #racism was predominant. Do not recommend!

Been driving by this place for a while on the way to driving up north and finally got to try it. I will say it's not your traditional fish and chip place so if that's what you're expecting then you might be disappointed. All that aside it was actually quite good! Got the fish and chips with extra order of fish and a burger. Burger was pretty juicy and had good flavour, fries were nice and tasty and the fish was very moist. Some reviews say that they use fish sticks.. couldn't figure out if that was true or not, the shape resemble that.. but it was good. The fish was more breaded than battered but it was nice and crispy. Only thing that wasnt good was the tarter sauce.. too much relish and not creamy enough. All in all a good place and I would go back again one day.

If you're looking for a bite on the up or back from your cottage, this is a pretty good place to stop to have a bite. There's is plenty of parking available since it's right next to the Foodland grocery store. Just make sure you have ca$h handy... ? No credit or debit available.

Super nice ladies who run the chip truck. Best fries around. Great poutines. Thank you so much !

Ordered poutine, gravy and fries were good but they used shredded marble cheese instead of the only cheese that should ever grace a poutine...white curds.

We had ordered a large poutine a medium fire and gravy and a cheese burger of a total of $27. The poutine was cheaply made not even real cheese curds just shredded cheese from a bag. Gravy wasn’t even heated up right as it seemed like they had just taken it out of the fridge and put it in microwave for 30 seconds as the gravy was still cold and chunky definitely not worth $9.50. Burger patty is a cheap frozen patty they most likely got from across the road with processed cheese and bacon that looks like it’d come from a fast food restaurant. Save yourself time and money do not come here.

We ordered the Fish & Chips. Disappointed to discover that there were 2 sorry pieces of fish which had been deep fried in chicken finger breading. Shouldn’t the fish be beer battered? Lady working the truck was miserable too as it appears that I interrupted her smoke break. Do not go here, I wouldn’t recommend it at all!!
