My wife and I got engaged at the Black Tartan in 2023 and then came back for our wedding rehearsal dinner in 2025. Both times we've had some of the best food we've ever eaten there. The service is impeccable and the atmosphere allows for easy, excellent conversation with friends and family. I would strongly recommend everyone try it at least once, you'll go back on your own after that.
I really struggled with this review. This was our second time coming to this restaurant. First experience was absolutely mind blowing in September 2023. Second time a week ago was a little different. We didn’t like some of the courses which is a little sad considering the price. Besides the two items we didn’t like, everything else was exceptional, from the service, to the team, to my cocktail. But the scallops were underwhelming. And the venison was extremely tough. You couldn’t chew it enough. Apart from that, the presentation and taste of the other 5 courses were delicious.
After years of having the Black Tartan Kitchen on our list, we finally made it!

We spent a beautiful Saturday afternoon on their cozy patio, surrounded by vibrant mural art and a charming little garden, both adding a fresh burst of color and life to the space. It was the ideal setting for a relaxing lunch.

We tried the three-course lunch seasonal menu, and every dish was both tasty and beautifully presented. The ingredients were fresh, carefully chosen, and clearly sourced with intention. You can really taste the pride they take in supporting local producers and showcasing the best of what is in season.

A special shoutout to our server, Paolo, friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate. He guided us through the menu and shared the stories behind the dishes, which made the whole experience even more meaningful.

If you are looking for a dining experience that is thoughtful, local, and full of flavour, Black Tartan in Carleton Place is a wonderful place to start.
7 course meal with wine pairing, last weekend in May, was very enjoyable. Composition and tastes of each dish were great. I’m not a fan or orange wine but it went with the scallop serving. Chef’s description of each plate helped the experience
We had a lovely experience at The Black Tartan Kitchen! We reserved a table for their “Supper Club” experience. The local food supplier was Trillium Meadow Farm who supplied food for all four courses. We enjoyed hearing about the farm and how they care for their animals. Chef/ owner spent time explaining every course selection. The wait staff were friendly and proficient. The wine pairings were spot on! What’s not to love!
We went to the Black Tartan to celebrate our anniversary with another couple. We had the 4 course menu which consisted of asparagus, scallops, venison, and a sorbet for desert. Each course was presented with an explanation for each and all were delicious. The wait staff were very attentive and accommodating however it is a small restaurant and was very noisy, so much so that it was difficult to hear the people across from us. For this reason, and this reason only, I will not be going back.
We were gifted dinner here as a wedding present. The food was superb, the service excellent and the ambiance welcoming.
We would highly recommend and will be back.
An absolute phenomenal restaurant - amazing chef MJ… wow just wow.. and Paolo our server… what a fantastic lunch today with the best staff ever! This is coming from us .. who are 2 people who are not ones to eat at a “fancy” restaurant … but all we can say is this place is a must try! The food is incredible! Highly recommend ! Best lunch we have had in a long while! Thanks MJ and Paolo for a great afternoon! DELISH!!!
Absolutely loved our lunch at the Black Tartan Kitchen! The food was so creative and delicious! Ian and his team do it up right. Can’t wait to go back 😊
BEST RESTAURANT IN ALL OF OTTAWA/OTTAWA VALLEY
I have been here over 10 times with different sizes of groups and every time Ian (the chef) blows it out of the park, I’m always surprised of how much I love it even if I think I won’t. The service is top notch.

Absolute perfection!
My husband and I got married here in June. We had a list of 10 restaurants and visited The Black Tartan first, and we never even considered the other 9 afterwards. We were blown away by the attention to detail, hospitality and the quality of the food. The owner, Ian, made it extremely easy and simple for us to plan everything and recommended the flower shop across the street (The Flower Boutique) - Erica there was fantastic.
The entire evening, from arrivals, to set up, the 7-course meal, the decor, presentation, cocktails and everything else were a solid 11/10. We were extremely satisfied by how everything was done and, even though we were served venison and lamb, everything was enjoyable and delicious.
Worth every penny! Food is sourced locally, and every meal will be an adventure to remember.
We will continue to return in the future! Thanks Ian and team for everything!!

We went for Supper Club recently and...wow! Incredible food. The duck confit and heirloom tomato salad were particular standouts. Warm and inviting atmosphere. You can feel a strong sense of community as soon as you walk in. If you get the chance, treat yourself to this experience.
