On February 25th, 2026 my family and I indulged in another Black Tartan Supper Club dinner, this time featuring dishes prepared with Hummingbird Chocolate products, of Almonte Ontario. The incredible four course meal was prepared by Ian Carswell and his team, with each course introduced by Ian, and further elaborated on by Ms. Erica Gilmour, one of the founders of Hummingbird, who explained the type/style of chocolate used in the dishes.
When Ian sent out the announcement for this Supper Club, we attempted to reserve a table for 5 a couple of days later with no luck. When I called to make the reservation I discovered that this event sold out the same day the announcement was sent out. I asked to be put on a waitlist but wasn't holding my breath. I mean, who cancels a gourmet meal that involves chocolate. Fortunately, Ian did call me a couple of days later with good news. Although nobody cancelled, he was cleverly able to make room for us.
Ian Carswell, the owner of the Black Tartan, honed his skills working at a 2 Michelin Starred restaurant in Helsinki Finland. When we first started going to the Black Tartan in 2022, we weren't familiar with Michelin level dining. Well, we were blown away with the significant step-up in this kind of dining experience. It's not only delicious, its like eating art. Now we're kind of addicted and go for dinner here several times a year.

Four of us had the 7 course with degustation (wine for 6 of the courses). It was delicious, interesting (food combinations) and fun. The staff were friendly and knowledgable. (Especially the ketchup joke).
We will be back and I recommend it for those who appreciate fine dining....

We did the 7 course with wine pairings and this is my new favorite place. It's not only the food but also the way they move through each course that makes everything feel so personal and intimate. Run, don't walk.

The food is amazing, fresh, and locally sourced. I have celiac disease, and they accommodate my strict gluten free diet without sacrificing flavour or presentation. Always an amazing dining experience!
The food quality and presentation is absolutely on point at Black Tartan. We have always had exceptional service and delicious food here. No complaints! Great to have a local spot to eat that is second to none.
I have been wanting to take part in the Black Tartan culinary experience, in Carleton Place, for many years. Well, it finally happened this evening and it was, without a shadow of a doubt, worth the wait. Every dish was absolutely delicious. The seasonal menu is imaginative; rich in flavours yet light. Perfectly prepared and beautiful presented; magic for the palate and the eyes. This is a culinary must! Love the concept! Itโs like going to a friendโs house who happens to be an exceptional chef! The staff is warm and welcoming.

We really enjoyed our visit to Black Tartan! Beautiful food, appreciated the locally-sourced ingredients and Canadian drink selections in the pairings. The chef coming out to explain the dishes was fun and added to our experience.

We had the 4 course tasting menu. It was very unique in which they brought out each course to the entire restaurant and the chef explained each course. Food was amazing.

I want to share my sincere appreciation for the Black Tartan Kitchen at 132 Bridge St. in Carleton Place, Ontario. I live on Vancouver Island in British Columbia and emailed to ask whether it might be possible to leave a gift certificate at the restaurant for my elderly parents. Instead, they very kindly called me and offered to hand-deliver a gift certificate directly to my parentsโ rural home, purely out of the goodness of their hearts. I have not yet had the chance to eat there myself, but after experiencing this level of thoughtfulness and care, I will absolutely make a point of visiting when I am able. Their kindness, warmth, and strong sense of community meant more to me than I can say, and it was such a lovely and memorable holiday gesture.

I grew up in Lanark county, to say I was stunned at the black tartan to find food that rivaled (if not surpassed) many of the top restaurants Iโve been lucky enough to try in Toronto is an understatement. I was blown away, the service was so impeccable itโs rare for me to feel so welcome in a restaurant, the food across three courses left me and my family speechless for days. Not only was everything beautiful but every bite was better than the last. Iโve often heard it said tartar is a mark of an exceptional chef, itโs easy to make warm food taste good but you have nowhere to hide in a cold dish like tartar, and I can only say that I was blown away by the balance and seasoning, matched with what is clearly a devotion from the chef and staff to highlighting local ingredients. I can say with certainty that I will go back every chance I get. All my thanks to the staff for reminding me why I love the area so much
