Great spot. However it get very busy and loud. The staff was friendly and seemed to handle the pressure well.

For a coffee shop, their coffee and pastries are really good. However, their hot chocolate is on the weak side.

All I was hunting for was good espresso. While the espresso was decent, it probably reduced in flavor because of the barista's attitude, who I think was not enthusiastic about their job and impolite towards customer. Again, might have been their work pressure. Noticed only one barista on a busy afternoon.

Not sure if it's just me but I visited this place 3 days in a row including today and I consistently got frowns from the cashiers for all those 3 days. They also got one order wrong yesterday and they insisted that they were correct and we were wrong. Not a great experience. Hopefully this is not the case for most people.

This was so disappointing and heartbreaking: a dry/stale almond croissant on a Monday morning! I could understand a stale (and discounted) stale croissant on Sunday afternoon… but on a weekday morning… this is just bad. Balzac, what happened to you????

This is my second visit. The person taking my order was friendly, but the woman making the coffee was quite unfriendly. I understand that it's because they're busy, but I don't think they give it away like they're throwing drinks.

Cute coffee shop. Loved the outer layers of the croissant. We had the chocolate croissant.

Always good quality coffee and great lattes! Be mindful of how busy it can get on Saturdays during the market though.

Decent coffee but it’s laughable we had to wait 30min for two drinks.

horrible EXTREMELY overpriced coffee that just sucks as you can tell there’s no care that gets put into making it.the staff don’t even look At you (just through you or not even at you entirely) while you tell them your order.. you can tell you’re a bother to them.the place is also terribly understaffed and they can’t keep up with the busyness of the location

Wow - hadn’t been at a Balzacs since went to the one in the Distillery district about 20 yrs ago. Wasn’t missing anything… They still serve drip coffee out of thermos. Very Timothy’s/second cup of 20 yrs ago. And they charge $4.25 for an Americano?? The coffee seen has moved on in a BIG way in Toronto over the past two decades. This place has not, except for their prices of course. Don’t even get me started on their pastry options. The oat fudge bar was $4, and EVEN worse than the one that you can get at Starbucks. Mushy with non of the oat texture you would expect. Overly sweet as well. Dark depressing and cracked bench seating

I would come here to get a coffee and get away from the bust st Lawrence market. Atmosphere: 5 stars. A very cozy place. People are reading books. Having a conversation. There are a few large desks where people brought laptops and are doing work. There is enough space to sit down. Coffee: (3 stars) The coffee is ok, nothing special. Service: Friendly staff.
