Had the lemongrass chicken bowl… it was fine, overpriced for what it was and felt uninspired.

My favourite wings in the city. The Pho is amazing too but the wings are the best

I've been to Ca Phe Rang a handful of times since they opened, and my visit on November 10th was by far the best one yet. The pork belly spring rolls are great, as are the wings. Excellent service, thank you so much to the team for all their recommendations and attention to detail!

I was initially drawn to Ca Phe Rang because of the amazing friendship that birthed this restaurant. As a Vietnamese myself, I’m always looking to support Vietnamese businesses and Ca Phe Rang seemed to be the perfect spot to satiate my love for this cuisine. On a gloomy rainy evening, we decided to walk in, looking for a warm bowl of pho. The restaurant is cozy, with decoration elements that are nostalgic and signature of past Vietnam.
We got the house special pho, coconut shrimp rolls, a lemongrass soda, and a seasonal slushy. Though my unculturedness does not allow me to recall exactly what the slushy was, we all loved and raved about it. I’m not really big of a lemongrass and soda enthusiast myself, but the lemongrass taste was faint and it was a refreshing drink overall. I didn’t get the chance to try the coconut shrimp rolls since they were enjoyed by a non-meat-eater, but they looked amazing.
With pho as the only soup-based dish on a rather small menu, me and my partner had high hopes when we ordered the house special. Unfortunately, we were quite disappointed and our palates were left desiring for something more. As you can see in the attached photo, the broth was dark and muddy, which, in my humble Vietnamese opinion, is a big no-no when it comes to the iconic pho. I also found the broth to be rather flat and lacking in depth, which again, in my humble born-and-raised-in-Vietnam opinion, is a result of being a little too light-handed on the use of spices. The pho noodles were thin - not my favorite thick and wide kind - but that is just a matter of personal preference. What fascinatingly puzzled me though, is the noodles’ al-dente-like texture. While my (Italian) partner had no complaints, and even jokingly said that it must be Matty Matheson’s Italian twist, I think the pho noodles should have a softer texture with just a little chewiness. Given the al dente texture, my guess is that Ca Phe Rang used dry pho noodles, and not making them in house.
I realized that perhaps I am indeed a Vietnamese food snob, I’ve come to accept my fate. However, these are my true thoughts and feelings of my experience dining at Ca Phe Rang. Overall, we still enjoyed our dinner and the service, and I will always try to support Vietnamese restaurants. I have yet to try the banh mi, but I (as a nobody) can be bribed with some with extra pate 🥖

First & definitely not last time being here. The service is so naturally excellent. The team is genuinely kind and welcoming. The atmosphere is delightful. Can’t wait to keep coming back and try every single thing on the menu. If I could give it a 10 out of five rating, I would.

So I don’t think I’ve had food this good in a while. The lemongrass chicken Banh Mi here is probably my favorite in Toronto so far. The fried chicken wings were out of this world, so delicious, well seasoned and crispy. The sauce it comes with is incredible. Service is great and atmosphere too. Massive thanks to Marzia, Angela and all the chefs working there.
