Cute little bar setting for this understated restaurant. Food is fantastic, with very authentic Japanese flavours and ingredients. The menu is quite unique for a North American Japanese restaurant, and we were really pleasantly surprised with just how much we enjoyed everything. Very reasonably priced too. We will definitely be going back!

Unfortunately, we were a bit disappointed with this place. The food was surprisingly bland - the chicken nanban had an opportunity to impress however it lacked the crunch and heat needed to make it great (it was lukewarm at best). The service was good and the atmosphere was nice however.

A friend and I went here by total accident when trying to find the place upstairs. We wound up staying for whatever reason and neither of us left disappointed. The cocktails we ordered were fantastic and reasonably priced. The desert we ordered to go with the drinks was also absolutely excellent; it was a type of cheesecake if I'm remembering correctly. The guy running the place emanated "good guy" energy; we didn't talk a lot but I liked him very much. Cool spot. I'll definitely stop by again if I am ever back in Toronto.Wheelchair accessibility: You have to go down stairs to enter. Unless there's an elevator in the back that I didn't see, you won't be able to access the bar in a wheelchair.

We came here to try some more food after being thoroughly impressed with the food upstairs. The food took awhile to come out and was decent. We weren't entirely fans of the darker fish in the sashimi/kaisen don. Our favorite was definitely the stir fried vegetable dish!

Food is pricy for the portion size and quality. But, most concerning were so many bugs around - there were cockroaches, flies, and tiny bugs. The cockroach climbing on the wall almost fell into my friend's bag...

There were a lot of bugs flying around, I’ve never seen cockroaches in Toronto but I saw one there and it fell onto the sofa section where we were sitting. Food was also pretty overpriced and mediocre. As soon as we walked downstairs there was a wet smell like mold mixed with incense, honestly don’t know where all the good reviews here came from. The server explained that the bugs are from upstairs restaurant (Zakkushi) but New Retro is owned by the same owner… bad excuse and quite unacceptable for this price point you’d expect better hygiene.

Cute little basement bar with many selections of Japanese whiskey. Food was good but it way too expensive compared to the quality and the portion of food. One thing I didn’t really like was that they have a poor ventilation system that it was very smoky inside the whole time.
