Excellent service, million dollar view, delicious food!!! Loved this hotel, and we will be back.
We stayed in one of the smaller rooms (William Shakespeare). But it had a beautiful, third floor, ocean view with a balcony.
Next time we’ll get Ernest Hemingway or Agatha Christie (both have balconies and ocean views). Thanks Hotel Silvia.

I'm writing this review from under a warm, fuzzy blanket while curled up in an oversized leather chair in the James Joyce Attic of Hotel Sylvia. It's been a magical stay from chapter one to the very last page, including having sunny, warm weather in January! We had been guests at the Sylvia Beach Hotel exactly 10 years ago this weekend, and while we knew it had been updated, we didn’t know what a knock-your-socks-off renovation it would be. The old building's charms remain, now dressed in upgraded beds, fixtures, furniture and the most stunning wallpaper I've ever seen. And the staff have been terrific along with yummy breakfast at Café Sylvia and complimentary cappuccinos when the mood strikes. We've enjoyed our much-needed escape from Portland, and we'll for sure be back...and we definitely won't let a decade pass before we return again.

As always, I loved our stay at Hotel Sylvia. This was the first time I've stayed since the remodel and was afraid that I would miss the quirky, charming rooms. Not at all! I love that there are now many rooms with king beds to choose from, all updated and still charming but now very classy. We stayed in the Jane Austen room, which used to be the Ken Kesey room. The king bed with positioned so that we could watch the sunset over the ocean and see the morning sun crawl toward us across waves and sand at sunrise.

The breakfast room has some of the best views in the hotel and the food was perfect. There was something for everyone on the menu.

The free espresso drinks was a lovely perk for overnight guests.

The James Joyce library was a huge improvement for that attic space.

Around 4:30, we set out to walk to Local Ocean for dinner and enjoyed the entire sunset and post sunset glow before turning toward the bayfront. Magnificent!

If I were to make one change, I would ask for 100% cotton or linen sheets. Microfiber sheets creep me out when they spark in the dark.

I had an amazing time at Hotel Sylvia. I had been wanting to go for many years and was able to make it happed this year, after the new ownership took over. There was concern about it losing its charm - but they did a really wonderful job of making the place feel clean and updated without loosing the quirks and charms of an old building.

My room was wonderful, the fireplace was ideal with the stormy weather. Bed and pillows were really comfortable with multiple places to sit.

I was able to walk to many restaurants and right down to the water. The walk up to the 4th floor of the hotel was my favorite - it holds the library with plethora of places to sit and read, play games, write, or just watch the ocean.

The food in the cafe was wonderful, especially the biscuits. I was there for one of the special dinners on Christmas Eve and it was exceptional.

The only bummer was my trip wasn't a few days longer.

This literary-themed beach hotel is an absolute dream. It’s the kind of place that makes you briefly consider becoming a novelist, or at the very least journaling and overthinking aggressively by the ocean.

Housed in a beautifully converted beach house in a charming small waterfront town in Oregon, each room is thoughtfully themed after a different author. Staying here feels like stepping into a story. The attention to detail is exceptional without ever feeling gimmicky & oh so cozy, intelligent, and genuinely inspiring.

I stayed over Christmas Eve and Christmas with my dog, and the experience was exceptional. This place is truly dog-friendly in ways that actually matter — personalized food and water bowls, a huge and incredibly comfortable pet cushion, treats, and bags provided for walks and clean-up. The surrounding downtown is also wonderfully walkable, with several nearby coffee shops happy to offer pup cups, which made mornings even better.

The manager, Blake, and staff member Alex are outstanding — kind, accommodating, and genuinely welcoming. They create an environment that encourages relaxed, thoughtful conversation among guests and staff alike, giving the hotel a warm, communal feel that’s rare and memorable.

It’s quietly magical, in a way that’s hard to manufacture and even harder to forget.

P.S. Try the crepes!

My first trip to the then Sylvia Beach Hotel was in 1987 when I was 27. I loved it and returned many times over the ensuing decades. When I heard that Goody and Sally had sold the hotel after 40 years (!!) and it would be “reborn” as a literary hotel after some much needed TLC—I eagerly awaited the time when I could return. Well, that time happened for my 66th birthday on December 7. I brought two beloved women friends with me for a proper week celebration. And WOW. Just WOW. We LOVED IT. (We had been there as a friend threesome in 2019 and had great memories and were hopeful we would have another memorable trip—and we were not disappointed.) First, Blake kindly upgraded our rooms before our arrival as we were there the week of the “atmospheric river” and the hotel had extra space. In fact, we had to stay an extra day/night just to be on the safe side traveling home—which again, management staff accomplished easily. While there, we were treated like royalty—bags offered to be carried upstairs/out to our vehicles when leaving, local restaurant guidance freely given, and my flower bouquet hand delivered to my room on Monday for my birthday. The new decor is stunning—beds and chairs are comfy, windows and doors work like a charm, and the bathrooms are—dare I say—dreamy? (There is something to be said for reliable hot water and great water pressure on weary muscles after beach walking, eating, and shopping!) The literary photos remained and were added to in the namesake rooms (Hemingway, Maya Angelou.) It was fun to guess who all the authors are in the theme rooms. The library at the very top is indeed cozy and conducive to while away hours of reading and writing. And we LOVED the lobby! We found ourselves spending quite a bit of time in the comfy leather chairs there in front of the fireplace, listening to the sounds of mama ocean and sipping (freshly made-by-the-friendly-staff) cappuccinos, as we studied the stunning mural on the south wall detailing the entire history of the building through all its changes. In addition, the breakfast/brunch food in the downstairs Cafe Sylvia is excellent—I know the biscuits have been mentioned before—and they clearly should NOT BE MISSED. What I especially loved is that one could order entrees or sides on the lighter side, too—which made eating there almost every day a simple choice. And for those with smaller appetites—the wait staff kindly offered to box leftovers and keep them in the kitchen refrigerator. In the afternoons, guests are welcome to spend time in the Cafe Sylvia room, too—to which a beautiful outside deck has been added with an outside fire. Because of the weather, we weren’t able to use it on this trip but look forward to in the future.

Overall—Hotel Sylvia remains a beloved classy literary act. No, it’s not exactly the same as the old Sylvia Beach Hotel—but I dare say that over time, the improvements and changes will allow the Hotel Sylvia to write her own beloved story that will be experienced and cherished by many. Big thanks to Blake and Alex and ALL the staff that made my 66th birthday week—and the “old ladies road trip” to the Hotel Sylvia perfect.

We had a wonderful visit at Hotel Sylvia! The manager upgraded us to an oceanfront suite with a balcony. The room was perfectly decorated as well as the entire hotel. The staff was amazing and made us feel at home. The espresso bar and breakfast was amazing and the location could not have been any nicer. I will say the only downside we ran into was the noise level due to being located on the ground floor next to the main entrance. Other than that, this was truly amazing and I can't wait to come back some day!

Having grown up in the Newport I have stayed at many places up and down the coast. Hotel Sylvia is truly lovely. It's updated and modern but retains that charm and comfort of yesteryear. The common areas are welcoming. The staff really above the norm. This is a beautiful property looking at the ocean and close to coffee shops, restaurants. Yes, they have WIFI cause not all of us are the book lover but we appreciate a beautiful quiet space. Highly recommend a stay at Hotel Sylvia.

I have stayed here twice, once when it was the Sylvia Beach Hotel, and once when it was the Hotel Sylvia...

The Sylvia Beach Hotel was 1000x better than this garbage! The newly renovated rooms and hotel does NOT hold its original charm and beautifully crafted rooms like Sylvia Beach Hotel did...

This was supposed to be a place to unwind, relax, and look at the beautiful ocean waves in a HISTORIC hotel. Since the remodel, there is nothing historic about this hotel. Needless to say, I will never return to this hotel EVER again!

My wife and I booked a late anniversary retreat and couldnt be happier. Nestled on the beach and only a block away from the cutest mainstreet, this was the perfect getaway for us.
