I’ll start by saying that I am not a foodie, I like good food in a good atmosphere. We were big fans of the prior iteration of Olympia Provisions, and decided to give Alpenrausch a try after reading all the accolades. Needless to say, this was just not for us. It felt like the food was complicated for the sake of being complicated (kombucha squash soup); what we did have was average and overpriced. I had the burger was nothing to rave about, and the charcuterie platter was just ok. The apple salad was fine, small portion for the price paid. Twice the server questioned whether this was enough food for us without any prompt from us. Add a noisy door and automatically added (underserved) gratuity and “wellness” fees, and we will most definitely not be back. I wish they would have left the old Olympia Provisions alone.

This restaurant experience had me looking up how to spell “pretentious.” After reflecting on the fondue for 2-3 meal, I can conclude that we just paid $43 plus 23% obligatory tip for a small deconstructed sandwich. That being said, who doesn’t love Olympia Provisions sausage?
My partner had the mezzeluna dish and it was nearly $30 for 10 small flat raviolis with beets.
The server was attentive/skilled for sure but came in hot with the “oh honey…” vibe when we asked if they’d split the bill by dish. I get that’s extra work, but dang that was some shade!

Food was good, there were a few things that could've been adjusted (over cooked escargo and pork). Service was phenomenal. Atmosphere is what we were looking for.

The biggest downfall is the 20% gratuity that is automatically placed on tables of 1 or more. I was recently told this was new as of this week. Supposedly we could adjust this if we asked specifically to remove it. Servers are already earning minimum wage ($20 and hour) plus gratuity that is given to them and cooks. Although we already planned on giving them a tip, we decided not to as there was a 20% already given to them. The east coast tipping culture has moved onto the west coast tipping culture, forgetting that we earn $20 and hour, not $3-$6.

***Gratuity is posted as if it were due, however supposedly you can opt out. We were informed after the fact***

It's illegal to claim a fee as a gratuity, however they failed to even mention an opt out until after the fact.

This was a very mixed food experience. Venison tartar and venison with gravy and fries, 5+ stars. Fondue was HORRIBLE, roux was broken which made fondue gritty and runny. With fondue was potatoes that were over cooked and fell apart when dipping. Vegetables are pickled, must be a thing but was horrible. I love pickled veggies but not in fondue! Warning bill has employee wellness added took it off tip.

Fondue was incredible. The drinks were interesting & well made. The venison frites was tender & the jous was incredible. I seriously considered licking the plate. Get the escargot.

Alpenrausch is a charming gem, perfect for a cozy evening. Their fondue is simply exquisite—rich, creamy, and indulgent, served with the tastiest accompaniments. It's a must-try for anyone seeking an authentic Alpine dining experience.

Fondue didn’t have enough vegetables for me. I think one tiny piece of cauliflower and some pickled celery…? Cocktail a little syrupy.

We visited Alpenrausch after it was highly ranked by Bon Appetit Magazine. Was excited to try out their food since they are close to where we live. We ordered several items from their menu and the overall consensus from everyone at the table was disappointment. Given the high rating from Bon Appetit and the price we paid for dinner, we expected a lot more quality and flavor. The poached trout didn't have much flavor, the Venison Frites was way too salty and honestly, serving fries with Venison is not what I envisioned with Venison, especially from a high-end restaurant. The Roasted Quail was sad looking - a tiny amount of quail for a $34 dish. The Maiale alla Valdostana was undercooked, which is not great. Some of the starters that we ordered were tasty. If I were to go back, I would order a few starters and stick with that. Overall, we were pretty disappointed with our experience.

Had a wonderful evening dinner. Came without a reservation on a Tuesday evening but we're about to be seated outside. Weather was nice and there were blankets at each table if it got too chilly.
We were brought a sample on the house which was a wonderful example of the menu and hospitality. Enjoyed the raclette by candlelight which was superb! The cheese was amazing and the potatoes was seasoned perfectly! Check that off my bucket list ✔️
We split the cheese fondue for dinner and again the cheese flavors were distinctive and rich, the options for dipping offered a variety of flavors and textures and made the dinner a wonderful experience as well as filling.

Really bummed out about my experience here. I read that this restaurant was on some kind of James Beard "watch list", so I thought they would be on top of their game. It wasn't all bad, I thought the atmosphere was pretty nice, they have a good wine selection (for full bottles). Also, besides forgetting one of our side items before being reminded, the staff was fairly attentive and professional.

The problem that we had (besides the uneven wobbly table that we were sat in) was that the food was just not good. The saving grace was maybe the side item (a simple roll) that was light and fluffy. The two stars for the food are mainly from the roll.

For the starter, we got the charcuterie board, which says it comes with 5 different meats. It only came with three. The board was decent-at-best, and for the price, it seemed like not a lot of food, as well as not what was advertised. I can throw together a better board at home.

We decided to split a main, which was the pork chop. My wife's menu said it was bone-in, but mine didn't, so we kind of rolled the dice. It was bone-in, and since there was melted cheese on top, we had no idea where to cut, and ended up absolutely butchering it. The knife provided was thin and felt like it was going to snap in half when cutting up the chop. Baffling decision from whomever created the menu. Probably 1/2 of the chop was either bone or gristle.

Super disappointed in the experience as a whole, and frankly, I was shocked at the level of quality given the hype and the price. There are plenty of other restaurants in Portland that serve similar fare at a much higher quality level, and I see absolutely no reason to return to Alpenrausch. I hope they can work out the kinks and realize that having a good atmosphere isn't enough to keep up in a town with some of the country's best food options.
