For the better part of two decades, An Xuyen has been one of the most popular banh mi places in Portland's ultra competitive Viet food scene. They had a great start, solidifying a fan base that largely remains loyal today and are now offering a myriad of items that go beyond Vietnamese sandwiches. The good news is that they're a true bakery. Unlike a lot of dedicated banh mi shops that only sell baguettes and some Vietnamese snacks, An Xuyen has an incredible array of baked goods and pastries that would put the average bakery to shame. From croissants and cake pops to cookies and cakes, it's hard not to peruse all the delicious items they have in their display cases each day. The fact the store is so small (mainly standing room), it really feels like a clutter of pastries of all varieties. However, the banh mi has lost its initial mojo since their heydey. They now only sell bbq pork (xa xiu), meatball (xiu mai), shredded pork (bi), followed by combination (thit nguoi), nem nuong, paté, chipotle chicken (#1), pulled pork, pork belly, tuna sandwich, along with a couple of veggie meat options. The baguettes themselves are fine, but the skimping of the butter, paté, and meat portions are disappointing. I do think that savvy banh mi enthusiasts aren't going to be too impressed with the current state of affairs. Prices are rising everywhere, which is definitely being felt out here. The prices for banh mi are getting closer to the $6 mark and their ube mochi is .99 each. The service is also subjective as well, where as the owner (with glasses?) is sweet while the other woman is not the warmest. They also have a limited dedicated parking lot and accept credit cards but cash is preferred. I'll definitely come back to try the non-Viet items but will cool it with the sandwiches for now. Banh bao, pate so, and cakes? Sign me up. ___________ (#1) Wait, what?

This place is an absolute gem. I have lived near by it for ages and had no idea it was here, but I am definitely going the make it a regular treat now. The staff is super friendly, the prices are very affordable, and the food/drinks were excellent. Quite possibly the best banh mi in town. I'm so glad I found this place and I wish them so much success!!

A very delicious bakery. Their macaroons are huge and amazing, their Bahn mis are stuffed and delicious, and their bubble tea is great. I haven't had anything bad there. Definitely recommend.

I usually come here for lunch and get a banh mi and some bread for home cooked meals. It's typical Vietnamese bakery prices (very affordable) and both sandwiches I frequent are good. The tofu banh mi is delicious and I could eat the tofu on it's own. Their mock meat sandwich is also pretty good and well seasoned too.I really appreciate their hamburger buns which they supply to some restaurants. It really makes a lot of menu items at other places. Their french rolls are great and have really spoiled me to where I don't wanna make my own sandwiches on grocery store bread.

I love everything about this place except for the size of the customer area. If there is more than 3 or 4 people in there it makes it almost claustrophobic for me. Thankfully service is lightning fast and the claustrophobic feeling comes and goes as fast as we get our sandwiches. The quality can NOT be beat for the price!
