From the moment I walked in, I was pleasantly surprised at how busy it was but such a warm comfortable atmosphere. I came for my Birthday dinner and ended the night with a complimentary dessert! Our waitress was very informative of the menu, recommendations, and how the service was going to go in order. I appreciated the Experience. I will be returning.
Food was pretty good. We loved the Siberian Osetra caviar, the maduro foie gras nigiri, and the shrimp tempura makimono. Didn’t love the mushroom bao buns or the matcha tiramisu. The kitchen was a little slow. Our server was very sweet and gave excellent service. Love the tree inside! Music was a little loud. The Rosé sake and the yuzu sake were really, really good.

My girlfriend and I celebrated our anniversary here and the food was amazing but the service was PHENOMENAL. The entire staff (shoutout to Maria!) made sure that we were having a great time every step of the way, from ordering our food to bringing out a complimentary dessert to celebrate our special occasion. We felt so special and will definitely be coming back.
Average food, if you want to be treated like they are doing them a favor for eating there, this is the place. Disappointing!

I had high expectations which weren't met. The restaurant was really cold, and the atmosphere wasn't great. They had QR Code menus - I would prefer nice paper menus for fine dining. The food was really good, but overpriced for what it was. If money isn't a concern of yours, then sure - try it out. If you only go out to fine dining sparingly, then I'd suggest going somewhere else.

Wow - totally overpriced for very mediocre food. If the restaurant adds a 20% service charge on each bill, the slip should not default a 'tip option' - that is deceiving. Fortunately, our server made us aware. I had MUCH better food in better places for less than $260.
Read mix reviews but we thought we give it a try. Bad idea. The food was mediocre. Nothing we haven’t had and nothing too spectacular.The person who filled our water glasses was the most attentive. If it wasn’t for him, I would not rate the service a 5.Icing on the cake was when the server dropped the plates. The food splattered onto me and dipping plate broke under my kid’s chair. That in itself was not the problem. The problem is in the poor performance from the manager. Oh wait! Was there even a manager on shift ??♂️ No acknowledgement or checking on us to make sure everything was ok. This kind of experience separates a stellar establishment from a mediocre one.Someone says it best on one of the reviews. Portland is a foodie scene. There are many places to try. I would not waste your time or money here.They should learn from Shalom Y’All - service and food!

We were treated badly based on our color. We were asked to leave and go stand outside in the cold because we were taking selfies. We knew better not have to camera flash in anyone’s face or catch anyone. It was my birthday and one of the waitress throw down the cake ? on table and barely wished me a happy birthday and stepped off. She didn’t care if I eat with my fingers. We were TREATED POORLY BECAUSE we are BLACK. I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO JANKEN! I will ensure others people know about this.

I have read good and bad reviews and was leery of going to this restaurant. However, what a great experience!! The food was beyond great, it was fantastic. Service was exemplary. Sonia was our server and was wonderful. The minuses were the music was too loud and I didn't appreciate the servers cleaning the table while we still eating and talking but overall a very great experience. Costly but worth every cent.
This was my second visit to Janken; the food, ambiance, and service are excellent. I love the cherry blossom sculpture. We ordered steak tartare, broccolini, sea scallops, and salmon tataki. Janken has a strong grasp of the concept of umami, in my opinion - the complexity of flavors is just lovely. The prices are relatively high for Portland, but this is a special place.
