Some of the best sushi in Portland for decades, going back to when it was Sushi Takahashi 2 (at a different location). Highly recommended. Great options for vegetarian sushi as well!

Vegetarian options: Several vegetarian options available, and when they're not too busy, the chef makes fantastic custom rolls as well.

Perfect spot to bring a first date! Super cute little hole in the wall offering a hip interior, fair pricing, and the best bbq unagi I've had in a long time 😋
Missing a star on service because they were not able to break a $100 bill as payment for my dinner, forcing me to use my debit card 🤔
Highly recommend, try the unagi!

I hate to write anything negative about any small business, especially what seems to be family owned. But I would just like to extend my thoughts so that others are aware. I last came to Kashiwagi about a year ago before visiting again today. Last time, they had a bento option, with a small portion sizing, but decent for the price. This time, I came in with the same craving, but was told they don’t have the bento option anymore, so I opted to order the salmon teriyaki, sushi rice, and seaweed salad all separately. I also ordered takoyaki and a Calpico. Service was very quick and order took 15mins to complete. The salmon teriyaki alone was $10. My total order was 30$ total. For a lunch meal, that’s more than i would normally get, but I was treating myself. I arrived back to my office to open my meal and surprised to see how small the portion for the salmon was- it was about 2 inches wide, and a full finger length long. For 10$? Seriously? On top of that, the takoyaki was undercooked and honestly already going cold (it was a very short drive back btw) and just… did not taste like how it should. I didn’t eat sushi this time, and cannot speak about the quality of it, but I would absolutely not recommend veering away from the sushi options. The sushi rice portion sizing was pretty big and tasted good, and the seaweed salad was also good. Restaurant cleanliness was eh- lights were covered in cobwebs/dust and the floor was sticky but when you go to a hole-in-the-wall spot it’s to be expected, so I wasn’t too concerned about it so long as the food was worth it.

This is my go-to neighborhood sushi spot. Though the location is a bit undesirable (next to a Plaid Pantry and a dumpster) and the ambience is nothing special, the food is excellent for the price. The quality of the fish and rice is consistently quite good and I consider myself to have a high bar for reasons including having spent a considerable amount of time in Japan. I would definitely recommend that anyone looking for tasty sushi patronize this lovely neighborhood establishment. Plus, you know it's legit when you hear the workers chatting to one another in Japanese behind the sushi counter! Finally, they sell a few goods (yuzu jelly, Pocky, etc.) if you want something to purchase after your meal which I think is a nice touch.

Amazing service. Everyone is so kind and helpful!! Sushi is incredible. Smaller seating area if you plan on dining in, so if it's busy, expect a tight area. But apart from that, it's a great sushi place!! Our go-to spot for sushi, given its overall quality-to-price ratio 10/10 🙏🏼

I'm not going to write a slander piece here, And I have no beef with this particular restaurant. In fact, I would say, If you're just looking for a casual easy neighborhood sushi joint with no frills, don't hesitate to visit. The ownership here is very friendly and I honestly believe that all they're trying to do is be generous when they serve up huge honking pieces of sushi. But for me, I'm just not a big fan of big sushi. With sushi, bigger is not better and less is more.

This is an interesting phenomenon I'm noticing across most of Portland. The sushi restaurants that go overboard with the size of their roles and cuts of fish wind up getting these huge cult followings. Yoko's, Saburo's, and now Kashiwagi.

I just wanted to write this review to state this objective fact and you, the consumer, can make your own judgment as to whether you like that kind of sushi or not. Personally, I prefer delicate, small, bite-size pieces where quality trumps quantity. I'm not trying to go out for a cheap dinner when I want sushi. I'm trying to go out for a special meal. So for that reason, Kashiwagi is not for me.
