Once you get past all the trendy, hyped-uo sushi joints in Portland, and you hone in on the ones that simply offer up the best, freshest, most perfectly prepared fare, you will arrive at Masu. Or you can skip all the overrated BS and just come straight here and save yourself the disappointment. This is the sushi you want.

Incredibly slow. Took 25 min my order on what seems like a slow night. And the rolls I got taste unremarkable.

The quality of the food is superb but I feel like the specialty Maki section of the menu is lacking. They should include more options that are covered in tempura flakes and are drizzled in their varieties of sauce. Other than some of the options tasting bland I really liked the St Helens Volcano and the Death by Sushi. I like sushi that's really tasty and I'm willing to spend some money on it. I spent $200 for two people to eat here.

Sushi here is amazing! Stopped going anywhere else.

Wheelchair accessibility: Unless there was an elevator that I did not see, and do not believe this is wheelchair accessible.

The Tarte Tatin is an unexpectedly perfect ending to a meal here! Gotta try it - the miso caramel ice cream is to die for.

We were there for the first time. The food doesn't look very fresh, as if it's a little weathered. Not bad, but not wow either. I won't go a second time. Service is very long. We waited a very long time for our order. It also took a long time to clear the table (dirty plates were put away).

We had a great time here; was catching a show at Crystal Ballroom so decided to have dinner here before the show. We ordered several different dishes; Japonista, Lioness, tempura, St Helen’s Volcano, even tried the Uni (which was harvested from my hometown Santa Barbara). Topped it off with the Sweet Potato cake. The service we received was fine, nobody was rude to us and we never felt ignored. The guy who was at the bar even brought us a seaweed salad and said it was on the house! We will definitely come back and try some of their other dishes.

What really sets Masu apart is their desserts! As one of the few Japanese restaurants in the area offering such unique and delicious sweet options, they never disappoint. I always make room for dessert after enjoying an array of nigiri and a refreshing salad, both of which are equally satisfying. If you're a type who appreciates good design, Masu's timeless restaurant interior is definitely worth checking out as well.

I am not accustomed to the better end of sushi and in fact haven’t enjoyed sashimi in the past. However, I visited Masu several weeks ago and was blown away. I was with a group of about 10 and we shared many items. Every single bite was amazing. It was fresh and very enjoyable. Everything was presented attractively and was so delicious. The service was friendly and accommodating. The cocktails were anlso fantastic. And the setting was beautiful.

By far the best most creative sushi within the finest atmosphere that Portland, OR has to offer. There is only one Masu and the rest try to be like them. You’re welcome!

Drop everything and go bask in the immaculate, warm vibes of this place. The lighting alone will make you want to stay forever. 🌅

Nestled in the heart of downtown Portland, this sushi restaurant is nothing short of a transcendent experience. The moment you step inside, and make your way upstairs... you find yourself greeted by such a warm, elegant ambiance that it immediately sets the stage for the gastronomic adventure ahead.🍶

The sushi here isn’t just sushi—it is abundantly clear it is love and care translated through art. Every single dish I tasted was a true testament to the chef's skill, knowledge, and reverence for tradition, paired with an affectionate kiss of creativity. The fish is impossibly fresh. You really don't even need the soy sauce. The rice was absolute perfection. It's hard to find a sushi *experience* quite like this.  🍣

Standouts include the melt in your mouth otoro and hotate nigiri, the mind-blowing special I can't stop thinking about... the salmon flight. The salmon belly was OUT of this world with a tiny bit of yuzu gel... all I can say is I wish I could put that on absolutely everything. Then there is the miso-butter sauce on the black cod that had me in a chokehold. I could have embarrassed myself by licking the plate but held restraint. 🍽

I can't forget about dessert, the Okinawa sweet potato butter cake will have you punching the air... the salty-sweet miso caramel, again... puts you in a position to want to lick a plate. The chocolate dome with the raspberry and yuzu in the middle of the mousse is enough to push people over for. 🍋

Service is impeccable. Our server, Lucy,  intuitively anticipated our needs, gave excellent and precise recommendations, enhancing the experience without ever being intrusive. Every detail, from the handcrafted ceramics to the thoughtfully curated sake menu, is a reminder that you are in the hands of extraordinary and passionate professionals who take pride in their craft. Truly, a haven for sushi aficionados and culinary explorers alike. 🥢

But WAIT, I can't forget their house-made chili crisp... I ate every tiny piece of garlic bit out of it and wish they sold jars of it. 🌶 Sorry, Lao Gan Ma...

I'm already itching to go back to try the kaarage, the udon, and whatever new brilliance has landed on their specials menu.

If you're still reading this review at this point, you might as well just make some reservations. 🤷🏻‍♀️

My husband really wanted to go to a sushi place for his birthday dinner so we went on the hunt to find an awesome spot to celebrate and we came across Masu.
This place was nothing short of fantastic! The ambiance, food and overall experience was so fun and perfect for the occasion. The sushi itself was so worth the wait. We ordered the Calamari and 3 sushi rolls (Lotus, Lioness and the Nemo) and all were fantastic but our favorite was the Lioness you must try! But I can't imagine anything on the menu not being worth a try. Thank you Masu for helping us celebrate we will be back!

This is my favorite upscale sushi place! The food is delicious and the flavor combinations of the rolls are inventive. Ambiance is great. It has a romantic lounge vibe with soft lighting, and it's quiet enough to make conversation easily. The servers are knowledgeable about the menu and can make good recommendations. It's also one of the few sushi places I've seen that consistently has blue fin tuna! The otoro is my favorite. Highly recommend!
