Traditional Japanese with the freshest ingredients. Osaka sushi with the mackerel was outstanding. Chawanmushi is a favorite of my husband, as delicious as his mother made. Sushi, tempura, tofu were all excellent.

We used to love this place for it’s authenticity and delicious food. It’s unfortunately gone downhill. Given the prices I was appalled by the portions and quality. The chirashi at $40 was so overvalued for what you got. One piece of seafood and a heaping serving of ginger all over the rice. Was so appalled by how they served it and the stingy portions, I felt so sorry for my guests who ordered it upon my recommendation. The tai chazuke with 3 over cooked pieces of snapper in dashi thats clearly not homemade for $20 also further made the night worse. Out of respect for the past memories made here where we celebrated many events and special occasions, I chose not to add photos of the dismal food. Will not be coming back again as there are better and more honest sushi places for the money. Buyer beware.

⭐ 1-Star Review: Very Disappointing Experience at Murata (Portland)

I rarely leave bad reviews, but my experience at Murata was frustrating from start to finish.

First, the server asked what we wanted to drink. We said just water, and somehow they never brought it—not even when our dishes were already on the table. We had to eat our food with no water the entire time.

We ordered the sashimi combo, and the server came back to tell us they were out of tuna. Instead of offering a fair substitute, they tried to push us to “upgrade” to a more expensive combo for $10 more. When we politely said no, the attitude immediately turned rude and dismissive. They didn’t even offer an equal replacement—just tried to upsell us.

We suggested white tuna instead (which is cheaper than regular tuna), but they still refused and kept pushing the pricier option. Very unacceptable. Eventually we asked for more salmon instead, and they gave us tiny, almost laughable pieces—clearly not equivalent to what tuna would have been.

And the strangest part? We also ordered a sushi combo, and they did include tuna on that plate. So apparently they “didn’t have tuna” only when it came to avoiding giving us the normal sashimi set we paid for.

Between the missing water, the upselling, the rude attitude, and the inconsistent handling of ingredients, this was honestly one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had in Portland. Definitely not worth the price or the stress.

Really enjoyed my meal and experience here at Murata. haven’t had this good of sushi since Tokyo earlier this year. Atmosphere and serving reminded me of those kind moments in Japan as well.

Sushi and sashimi were excellent — really high quality. Our server brought the wrong (more expensive) sake, but it was so good we just went with it. The place stays busy, so definitely make a reservation. The staff do clear plates pretty quickly, which made it feel a bit rushed, but overall it’s a nice, authentic Japanese spot.

Had a nice dinner at Murata tonight and it was some of the freshest and best sushi my partner and I have both tried. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a top notch sushi place in Portland. Along with the food being amazing, the staff were incredible. Every single staff member was attentive, hospitable and created an extremely welcoming environment and experience. They were all so kind and provided us with 10/10 service. If you are considering trying this place out, do not hesitate and give it a go, you won’t regret it!

Amazing customer service even for a simple to-go order. The food was packaged nicely and I was given some tea to enjoy while I waited.

The best Japanese restaurant in Portland? I’d say yes. A definite treasure, and a blessing to downtown.

Fantastic Japanese restaurant with great vibes. The rolls were pretty good. But the Saba shioyaki was absolutely excellent! The teriyaki chicken was cooked perfectly and the sauce wasn't overly sweet, letting the flavor come through. I would definitely come back again, but make sure to book a table in advance.

Wow, what a uniquely special all-around experience! Every detail of the food and culture at this place is legit. The quality of the fish is 10/10. Most authentic Japanese restaurant I've been to in the U.S. It's a fairly small place, so get a reservation or they might have to turn you away.
