So good!!! I live in Alaska and I have been craving it for a long time, we don’t have it there. I have a 17hours layover in PDX and found out that there is Mala not too far from the airport. I’m so happy

My Mala life is started from here and no regrets.
Always, good food from here. Guobarou is always served with fresh without old burning oil fumes. Not too salty, not too sweet. Fresh pork deep was fried crispy but also chewy texture. Just right with Goldilocks rule, just perfectly served.
Mala Xiang Guo could be not authentic like Chinese way, but That’s why I like it just perfect food for me. Especially, on hard day, the place could be rewarding.

I have been on a quest to find new hotpot adventures since the permanent closure of my favorite PDX hotpot staple, Hotpot City. While it's a little pricey if you are hungry, it's a terrific choice and I am thrilled to have it as an option. My son loved it and he's been eating hotpot since he was able to sit in a highchair.

Food is really good, portions are up to you and is reasonably priced. I love hotpot and their broth is really good in my opinion. I went for a nice level 2 spice and it wasn’t too overwhelming, a good fit between spicy kick and flavor. If you like more taste than spice, I would go with a spice level 0 or 1.

If you go for the highest level spice, be warned there is Szechuan so it is kind of numbing, but if you like that, go for it!

I generally find myself getting less in terms of portion size, but with more variety to enjoy the diversity in my bowl. Definitely ask for help if it is your first time for a smoother and more enjoyable experience.

Plan on coming back and getting a level 0-1 hotpot with their instant noodles and more fishcakes.

Friendly reminder to get sauce AFTER filling your bowl! Their sauce bar is fire and I LOVE peanut sauce!! ?

We had a variety of dishes during our visit, including their fried rice, the Mala Xiang Guo (spicy dry pot), and the Mala Hong Tang (Korean-style soup-based Malatang). While both Mala dishes were enjoyable, I preferred the dry pot, which had a flavorful Szechuan stir-fry taste.

We also tried the Guobaorou, a deep-fried pork sirloin dish reminiscent of the Korean Tang Su Yuk, served with a sweet and sour sauce. The mayo mini Chinese pancakes were a hit with the kids, as were the fried rice and deep-fried pork.

However, we were a bit disappointed with the peas in the fried rice. They seemed off, with a sour taste and smell that suggested they weren't fresh, although the staff assured us otherwise. Next time, we'll likely skip the peas on the fried rice and the soup-based dish and go for the stir-fried dry pot instead.

Obsessed with this place, fav vegan meal in the city. Everyone who works there is amazing ❤️ The hot pot bar has like 5 types of greens, probably 3 kinds of tofu, a bunch of vegan noodle options, and it's a pretty good deal for how much food you get. It's super flavorful compared to other vegan hot pot, especially if you like spicy food. The broth is vegan by default. The lemony ponzu dipping sauce is good and the chili sauce is so flavorful, probably get a lower spice level than you think and just add chili sauce Updated from previous review on 2024-06-08

Worst customer service! She, who is the owner, served the food reluctantly and even looked at me with disdain. The food was okay but the service was unacceptable.

Excellent and fun concept dining. Choose your items (all based on weight), then choose how you prefer it prepared and served, either stir-fried or as a hotpot soup. Very friendly staff and beautifully fresh ingredients. A new favorite P-town eatery on NW Thurman.

HOTPOT HEAVEN

I freaking love me a good hot pot and this may be my new “go to” spot for it in Portland. Great fresh ingredients and you pay by the weight of the bowl. You can choose either soup or stir fry for your hotpot style. I got a 1 star spice level this time and will get a 2 next time.

The bowl you build goes back to the cook who carefully separated the ingredients to allow each to have the proper cooking time.

I opted to try most of the things and was THRILLED with the result.

UPDATE 4/25

Went back to try more items. Soup was still spot on and I sprang for a 2 spice level. It was pushing my spice level a bit, but I loved it. I ordered the supposedly “high quality” deep fried gyoza and it was frozen rubbish. They catfish you into ordering a frozen product you can buy at H-Mart with the photo on the menu. I’ve had better from the sample lady at Costco.

I’m going to try the pancake next and am hoping it’s not a frozen product as well…
